PERSPECTIVES ON SHAKESPEARE IN EUROPE’S BORDERLANDS

The format of the book as a collection of case studies is designed to highlight the variety and plurality specific for the translation and circulation of Shakespeare in borderlands. As the essays do not only cover a spate of locations, but also a large swathe of time, they have been organized in a chronological order.

We are surrounded by new musical encounters today as never before, and the experience of musics from elsewhere is progressively affecting all arenas of the human conscience. Yet why is it that Western listeners expect a certain cultural and ethnic 'authenticity' or 'otherness' from visiting artists in world music, while contemporary musicians in Western music are no longer bound by such restraints? Should we feel uncomfortable when sacred rites from Asia or Africa are remade for Westerners as musical entertainment? As these thorny questions suggest, the great flood of world musics and of their agents into our most immediate cultural environment is not a simple matter of expanding global musi...

This volume is a new compendium of Albanian etymology tracing thousands of modern Albanian words back to their origins. It contains detailed information on the Indo-European vocabulary preserved in Albanian as well as on numerous loanwords coming from ancient Greek, Latin, early Romance and Slavic. The ancient elements of the Albanian vocabulary are used for the reconstruction of their Proto-Albanian origin and then compared with their Indo-European parallels. The history of Indo-European words and of early loanwords in Albanian shows the history and culture of the Albanian people reflected in the etymology of the Albanian language. The book also includes a short sketch of Albanian historical phonetics and a vast bibliography. Every entry is extensively documented and contains earlier etymological explanations and interpretations.

Stratford Canning was a British diplomat who was seen as an expert in the Ottoman Empire due to his station in Constantinople. This collection of his papers concerning Turkey is arranged chronologically from 1874 to 1880; it consists of previously unpublished memorandums, editorials to the London Times, reviews, and scholarly articles. The papers concern questions of international relations, particularly between Russia, Turkey, Greece, and England; analysis of the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878); border disputes and other tensions between Greece and Turkey; discussion of the Treaty of San Stefano and the Treaty of Berlin (1878), which allowed many new Balkan states to come into existence and which unsettled the established powers of the region; an explanation of the revival of Greek independence; economic development, including concerns with Turkish currency; and a political history of Turkey with respect to the interests of Britain.

Approximately 40,000 years ago during the transition between Middle and Upper Paleolithic eras in Europe, Neanderthal man was being replaced by the anatomically modern man. Dr. Allsworth-Jones explores this period, focusing on a characteristic style of Central European cave called the Szeletian. His first-hand knowledge of the caves and in-depth study of related literature support his thesis that the Szeletian caves were the creation of Neanderthal man and were thus linked to that important period in prehistory.

Action Research in Organizations

Wie vollzieht sich Wandel in Organisationen? Was bedeutet Zusammenarbeit in einem Unternehmen?

The goal of this book is to gain a clear picture of the current status and future challenges with regard to the digitalization of the supply chain – from the perspective of the suppliers, the manufacturers, and the customers. They were the target groups of the book. Digitization has touched upon all aspects of businesses, including supply chains. Technologies such as RFID, GPS, and sensors have enabled organizations to transform their existing hybrid (combination of paper-based and IT-supported processes) supply chain structures into more f lexible, open, agile, and collaborative digital models. Unlike hybrid supply chain models, which have resulted in rigid organizational structures, unob...

Neanderthals and Modern Humans

Neanderthals and Modern Humans develops the theme of the close relationship between climate change, ecological change and biogeographical patterns in humans during the Pleistocene. In particular, it challenges the view that Modern Human 'superiority' caused the extinction of the Neanderthals between 40 and 30 thousand years ago. Clive Finlayson shows that to understand human evolution, the spread of humankind across the world and the extinction of archaic populations, we must move away from a purely theoretical evolutionary ecology base and realise the importance of wider biogeographic patterns including the role of tropical and temperate refugia. His proposal is that Neanderthals became extinct because their world changed faster than they could cope with, and that their relationship with the arriving Modern Humans, where they met, was subtle.
