Mangroves: Biodiversity, Livelihoods and Conservation

This contributory volume is a comprehensive collection on the mangrove forest eco-system and its ecology, the resources and potentials of mangroves, conservation efforts, mangrove eco-system services and threats to conservation. The book is an all-inclusive compilation on the status, conservation and future of mangroves. Mangroves are a unique ecosystem providing several ecosystem services. They are formed in the inter-tidal areas of large rivers and coastal islands. Mangroves thrives due to constant interaction with the terrestrial and marine ecosystem. These are the species dynamics, varying tidal amplitudes, plant succession, changing floral pattern of the channels of the estuary, the varying sediment transportation. There was 20% decline in mangrove forest area in the last 25 years due mainly to conversion and coastal development. Lengthy recovery periods required for the degraded mangrove forests. Hence there is an urgent need to take stock of the updated information on these mangroves at global level. It is of immense value to scientific community involved in teaching, research and extension activities related to mangrove conservation.

Jatropha, Challenges for a New Energy Crop

Jatropha curcas or Physic Nut is a small tree (bush plant) that produces fruits under tropical climate. The fruits contained seed that are ~40% oil rich. This oil is excellent for biodiesel. The bush is a now new coming crop because it may cope with harsh environmental conditions such as semi-aridity and poor land. It is considered as one alternative for climate mitigation that does not compete with arable land normally dedicated to food crop and can be used to regain degraded land or fight desertification. This bush has been considered seriously by the international community only recently (~2006-2008), but worldwide scientists did an outstanding job to drawn Jatropha out of its semi-wild s...

Role of Giant Honeybees in Natural and Agricultural Systems provides multidisciplinary perspective about the different facets of giant honeybees. Giant honeybees–Apis dorsata and Apis laboriosa are excellent pollinators of crops, fruits, and vegetables in cultivated and natural lanscapes. Their large size, long foraging range, and large work force make them the most spectacular of all honeybee species for crop pollination and honey production. Due to their decline, ecosystems and global food security are being threatened. This book is the first of its kind which deals in detail on varied aspects of giant honeybee biology, management, conservation strategies for protecting biodiversity and ...

Medicinal and Aromatic Plants In and Around Protected Areas of the Indian Subcontinent

The book covers many areas of Medicinal plants research including traditional and scientific research that boost extensional activities in India and abroad. Many plants incorporated in India but many years the traditional use practice is going on so these are important tools to use the components in herbal therapy. People use traditionally as well as mixed preparations to share their knowledge. In industry, many components have ben widely used to prepare medicines that is economic. In addition to the applied aspects it boosts ecological value because of the wide use of components as living parts or the products in India and abroad. The articles would convey the message for long term use and wide preservation techniques to conserve the species in a global basis.

Pollen Grains Are Male Reproduction Units. They Are Small And Formed In The Anthers Of Flowering Plants. Abiotic And Biotic Agents Transfer Pollen To The Receptive Site Of Flowering Plants. Abiotic And Biotic Agents Transfer Pollen To The Receptive Site Of Stigma. Among Biotic Agents, Bees Are The Tablished Intimate, Interactive Relationships With Flowers. The Pollen Grains Carry Different Kinds Of Nutrients And Upon Arrival At The Receptive Stigma, They Germinate And Continue Their Growth To The Embryo Sac In Ovary Of The Flower.
