The Thrombotic Process in Atherogenesis

The Thrombotic Process in Atherogenesis

Two infonnal meetings of consultants expert in hemostatic phenomena and in atherogenesis were held in Bethesda, Maryland, in December 1975 and February 1976 by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Their purpose was to discuss the current status of knowledge concerning the thrombotic process in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. It was readily agreed that thrombosis often played a major role in plaque building and in plaque complication. It was also commented, however, that the data were qualitative in nature and that quantitative infonnation was remarkably sparse. The term thromboatherogenesis was thought to be appropriate for those phenomena in which the full expression of the thrombotic process is manifest. At the same time, recent research was noted in which what appears to be an important pathway for the initiation of atherogenesis arises from the reaction of platelets with injured arterial endothelium and'Subendothelium without necessarily involving the complete classical thrombotic process. A name was not coined for this circumstance, but it was held that thromboatherogenesis was not a fully appropriate one.

Arterial Pollution

This two week course on Arterial Pollution covered the field of atherosclerosis as a disease entity, and includes its anatomical, physiopathological, epidemiologic, preventi ve and therapeutic aspects. With the cooperation of an outstanding group of inter national lecturers we have been able to present an overview of the disease and its accidents as it stands today. Such a scope differs greatly from the narrow workshops which only consider biochemical disorders, e.g., the lipoproteins or the risk factors. We believe it was timely to study the entire physiopa thological entity of arterial pollution and we included all aspects of the disease in one single sweep. We are grateful to the Nato Adv...

Diet and Health

Diet and Health examines the many complex issues concerning diet and its role in increasing or decreasing the risk of chronic disease. It proposes dietary recommendations for reducing the risk of the major diseases and causes of death today: atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (including heart attack and stroke), cancer, high blood pressure, obesity, osteoporosis, diabetes mellitus, liver disease, and dental caries.

Advances in Lipid Research, Volume 17 is a six-chapter text that covers the most prevalent problems in lipoprotein mechanism research works. The opening chapters examine the metabolic role of high-density lipoproteins (HDL), specifically the role of HDL in cholesterol transport. The next chapter discusses cholesterol metabolism in various types of clinical hyperlipidemias and describes cholesterol turnover as a function of hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, or a combination of the two. Other chapters deal with the hypocholesterolemic effect of polyunsaturated fats on man, as well as the mechanism of lipid peroxidation in mitochondrial membranes and its effects on alterations in cellular processes. The closing chapter relates to membrane phenomena, with particular emphasis to the study of membrane structure by means of membrane-cooperative enzymes. This chapter also explores the application of allosterism as a tool for membrane research. This book will prove useful to lipid and enzyme chemists, biochemists, and researchers.

Atherothrombosis and Coronary Artery Disease

Written by the world’s foremost authorities, this volume provides comprehensive coverage of current approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, and management of atherothrombosis and its coronary and noncoronary complications. This edition has been thoroughly updated, sharply focused on clinical information, and trimmed to one manageable volume. Coverage begins with a review of risk factors and prevention, emphasizing lipid abnormalities, hypertension, smoking, diabetes, and obesity. Subsequent sections examine the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, markers and imaging, acute coronary syndromes, chronic stable angina, and noncoronary atherothrombosis. Clinical presentations, medical management, and the latest interventional strategies are included.

Hypercholesterolemia, Hypocholesterolemia, Hypertriglyceridemia, in Vivo Kinetics

The past two decades have seen steady progress in our understanding of the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. The role of low density lipoprotein (LOL) increase and of LOL receptor deficiency or malfunctions in familial hypercholesterolemia has been largely enlightened by the works of Brown and Goldstein. These authors postulated also that modification of LOL to a form recognized by the scavenger or acetyl-LOL receptor may be required for lipid loading of macrophage-derived foam cells in the lesions. A growing body of evidence suggests that oxidative modification of LOL could enhance its atherogenicity by its implication as a factor in the generation of foam cells. Thus, if the role of LOL in ...
