An examination of how racial and gender hierarchies are intertwined in Brazil.
In this history of black thought and racial activism in twentieth-century Brazil, Paulina Alberto demonstrates that black intellectuals, and not just elite white Brazilians, shaped discourses about race relations and the cultural and political terms of in
The Ninth International Workshop on Persistent Object Systems (POS 9) took place at the SAS Radisson Hotel in Lillehammer, Norway, from 6th to 8th September 2000. Previous workshops in the series have been held in Scotland (1 and 2), Australia (3), the USA (4), Italy (5), France (6), and the USA (7 and 8). In keeping with those workshops, POS 9 was short but intensive, fitting 28 papers and panel sessions, a boat 1 excursion, and some memorable meals into two and a half days. The participants’ concentration was no doubt helped by the Northern European weather that prevailed for most of the workshop. Continuing a trend experienced over the previous few workshops, POS 9 had difficulty attrac...

How disenfranchised Black Brazilians use hip-hop to reinvigorate the Black radical tradition. Known as Black Rome, Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, is a predominantly Black city. The local art, food, and dance are closely linked to the population’s African roots. Yet many Black Brazilian residents are politically and economically disenfranchised. Bryce Henson details a culture of resistance and activism that has emerged in response, expressed through hip-hop and the social relations surrounding it. Based on years of ethnographic research, Emergent Quilombos illuminates how Black hip-hop artists and their circles contest structures of anti-Black racism by creating safe havens and alternative soci...
Stingless bees (Meliponini) are the largest and most diverse group of social bees, yet their largely tropical distribution means that they are less studied than their relatives, the bumble bees and honey bees. Stingless bees produce honey and collect pollen from tens of thousands of tropical plant species and, in the process, provide critical pollination services in the tropics. Like many other insects, they are struggling with new human-made challenges like habitat destruction, climate change and new diseases. This book provides an overview of stingless bee biology, with chapters on the evolutionary history, nesting biology, colony organisation and division of labour of stingless bees. In addition, it explores their defence strategies, foraging ecology, and varied communication methods. Accordingly, the book offers an accessible introduction and reference guide for students, researchers and laypeople interested in the biology of bees.
