Tsunami Science Four Years After the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami
The tragedy of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami has led to a rapid expansion in science directed at understanding tsunami and mitigating their hazard. A remarkable cross-section of this research was presented in the session: Tsunami Generation and Hazard, at the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics XXIV General Assembly in Perugia, held in July of 2007. Over one hundred presentations were made at this session, spanning topics ranging from paleotsunami research, to nonlinear shallow-water theory, to tsunami hazard and risk assessment. A selection of this work, along with other contributions from leading tsunami scientists, is published in detail in the 28 papers of this special issue of Pure and Applied Geophysics: Tsunami Science Four Years After the Indian Ocean Tsunami. Part I of this issue includes 14 papers covering the state-of-the-art in tsunami modelling and hazard assessment. Another 14 papers are published in Part II focusing on observations and data analysis.

Advances in Petri Nets 1987
The aim of these series of volumes "Advances in Petri Nets" is to present to the general computer science community the most significant recent results with regard to the development in the area. The main source of the papers are the annual European Workshops on Applications and Theory of Petri Nets"; the highest ranked papers from the past workshops are considered for the series, i.e., they are again reviewed and accordingly revised or extended. In addition to the workshop papers, the "Advances" also present invited papers. The present volume Advances in Petri Nets 1987 covers the 7th "European Workshop on Applications and Theory of Petri Nets" held in Oxford, Great Britain, in June 1986. It also contains a survey on complexity of problems related to Petri nets written by R.R. Howell and L.E. Rosier. Submarine Mass Movements and Their Consequences
Recent global events such as the devastating 1998 Papua New Guinea tsunami, the 2004 Sumatran tsunami and the 2006 SE Asia undersea network cable failure underscore the societal and economic effects of submarine mass movements. These events call upon the scientific community to understand submarine mass movement processes and consequences to assist in hazard assessment, mitigation and planning. Additionally, submarine mass movements are beginning to be recognized as prevalent in continental margin geologic sections. As such, they represent a significant if not dominant role in margin sedimentary processes. They also represent a potential hazard to hydrocarbon exploration and development, but also represent exploration indicators and targets. This volume consists of a collection of the latest scientific research by international experts in geological, geophysical, engineering and environment aspects of submarine mass failures, focussed on understanding the full spectrum of challenges presented by submarine mass movements and their consequences.
