The world faces significant challenges as the population and consumption continue to grow while fossil fuels and other raw materials are depleted at everincreasing rates. Environmental consciousness and a penchant for thinking about material cycles have caught on with consumers. Therefore, the use of environmentally compatible materials and sustainable production methods are now desired. Materials and Technologies for a Green Environment discusses the major issues surrounding the production of energy through biofuels and waste management. It comprises seven chapters that cover various fields of interest to readers involved in environmental management and sustainability planning. The topics covered include renewable energy sources, thermoelectric generators, electric vehicles, biodiesel production from poultry waste, scramjet combustion engines, and sustainable architecture for green buildings. Given its scope, this book is a valuable resource for students, researchers and engineers in environmental science, mechanical engineering, and chemical engineering and sustainability studies
This compilation on sustainability issues in civil engineering comprises contributions from international experts who have been working in the area of sustainability in civil engineering. Many of the contributions have been presented as keynote lectures at the International Conference on Sustainable Civil Infrastructure (ICSCI) held in Hyderabad, India. The book has been divided into core themes of Sustainable Transportation Systems, Sustainable Geosystems, Sustainable Environmental and Water Resources and Sustainable Structural Systems. Use of sustainability principles in engineering has become an important component of the process of design and in this context, design and analysis approach...
Climate change, energy production and consumption, and the need to improve the sustainability of all aspects of human activity are key inter-related issues for which solutions must be found and implemented quickly and efficiently. To be successfully implemented, solutions must recognize the rapidly changing socio-techno-political environment and multi-dimensional constraints presented by today’s interconnected world. As part of this global effort, considerations of climate change impacts, energy demands, and incorporation of sustainability concepts have increasing importance in the design, construction, and maintenance of highway and airport pavement systems. To prepare the human capacity ...
Industrial solid wastes, unlike liquid effluents and gaseous emissions, receive relatively less attention in terms of treatment, reuse, recycle, and recovery of useful by-products. These solid wastes have great potential for recovery and reuse. Predominantly organic wastes can be effectively treated by biological means to yield useful end products like methane gas as fuel and digested slurry as soil conditioner. Inert materials like plastics are effectively blended with other building materials, thereby improving the quality of the finished product and at least partially solving the problem of disposal of plastics. Inorganic wastes are excellent candidates for recovery of reusable building materials like sand and fine aggregate. Recycling of useful components from e-wastes goes a long way in reducing environmental pollution by toxic and hazardous wastes. This book places before the reader different ways and means used by scientists and engineers to minimize pollution of our natural resources and their overexploitation.
Industrial and academic scientists face increasing challenges to find cost-effective and environmentally sound methods for converting natural resources into fuels, chemicals and energy. With over 7000 papers published in this field of catalysis each year, keeping up with the literature can be difficult. Catalysis Volume 27 presents critical and comprehensive reviews of the hottest literature published over the last twelve months. Covering major areas such as chemical transformations using two-dimensional hybrid nanocatalysts, conversion of biomass-derived syngas to fuels and catalytic oxidation of organic pollutants in aqueous solution using sulfate radicals, this book is a useful reference for anyone working in catalysis and an essential resource for any library.
The book begins with a brief introduction, helping the reader to understand the fundamentals of stress concept and prestressed concrete systems. The discussion then follows to explain the computation of different losses and estimation of ultimate flexural and shear strength. Important codal provisions viz. IS1343-2012, Eurocode EN2 and BSEN-1:2004 are also highlighted in this text. For clear understanding of the materials, the text is supported by a good number of figures and tables. Besides covering the important topics on design and analysis of anchorage zone stresses and analysis of continuous beam, the book also discusses composite construction and circular prestressing. The book is designed as a textbook for the senior level undergraduate and postgraduate students of civil engineering and construction technology. KEY FEATURES

Internationally, significant attention is given to transport sustainability including planning, design, construction, evaluation, safety and durability of the road system. The 4th International Gulf Conference on Roads: Efficient Transportation and Pavement Systems - Characterization, Mechanisms, Simulation, and Modeling, hosted by the University o
Pavements are engineered structures essential to transportation, commerce and trade, and everyday life. In order for them to perform as expected, they must be designed, constructed, maintained, and managed properly. Providing a comprehensive overview of the subject, Pavement Engineering: Principles and Practice, Second Edition covers a wide range of topics in asphalt and concrete pavements, from soil preparation to structural design and construction. This new edition includes updates in all chapters and two new chapters on emerging topics that are becoming universally important: engineering of sustainable pavements and environmental mitigation in transportation projects. It also contains new...
