This book captures the turbulence of late Ottoman Yemen with vivid descriptions of the battles and campaigns between the Zaydī Shiite tribesmen of Yemen and the Ottoman forces. Çünkü İmparatorluğun kesin ilgasının üzerinden neredeyse yüz yıl geçmiş olmasına rağmen XXI. yüzyılın olayları, Osmanlı mirasının bazı parçalarıyla hala yaşadığını veya yaşamak için direndiğini göstermektedir. Bu miras sadece devletlerin ve millet-i hâkîmenin değil, bu bölgede yaşayan veya bir zamanlar buradan ayrılmak zorunda kalan tüm halkların hafızasında yaşamaktadır. Nitekim Osmanlı’nın son yüzyılı, daha sonraki Kürt kuşakları tarafından da bu dönemin olaylarına verilen değerden dolayı önemi her geçen gün artan bir zaman dilimidir. En örgütlü ve en geniş katılımlı Kürt isyanları bu dönemde ortaya çıkmış ve XX. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren Kürt tarih yazımı bu dönemde yaşanan değişimleri milliyetçiliğin özgün görünümleri olarak işleyerek XIX. yüzyılın Kürt tarihi içindeki yerini öncüllerinden daha çok vurgulamıştır.
Sultan-ı Cihan Abdülhamid Han
Kimi "Kızıl Sultan" dedi, kimi "Ulu Hakan"; Sultan II. Abdülhamid, "ifrat" ile "tefrit" arasında kaldı. Hâlbuki o, bütün tanımlamaların ve yakıştırmaların dışında, sadece devletini korumaya çalışan, bunu yaparken de sürekli ihanetlerle, suikastlarla karşılaşan, buna rağmen çok zor bir dönemde en zor görevi 33 yıl fasılasız sürdüren "Son İmparator"dur! Temelde kendisi gibi inanan insanların bile hışmına uğramış, o "devlet" derken "hürriyet" diyenler tarafından hırpalanmıştır. Derme-çatma "Hareket Ordusu"nun İstanbul’u kuşatması karşısında "Kardeş kanı dökülmesin" diye tahttan çekilmeyi kabul etmesi bile tam manasıyla anlaşılamamış. Bir taraf "korktu-bıktı-kaçtı" derken, diğer taraf "kişisel fedakârlık yaptı" demiştir. Biz ise muhaliflerinin ve taraftarlarının öne sürdükleri gerekçelerle ona/zamana bakıp hiçbir hüküm vermeden onu ve zamanını okumaya/anlamaya çalıştık. Günümüzü kavramak için bu bir zarurettir.
