Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui biografi dan kontribusi Syaikh ‘Abd ar-Rauf Singkil dalam bidang Ilmu Falak. Pada penelitian ini target yang diharapkan adalah mendapatkan gambaran isi naskah “Risalah fi at-Taqwim” karya Syaikh ‘Abd ar-Rauf Singkil, yang mana naskah ini terbilang langka. Selain itu, seperti diketahui, Syaikh ‘Abd ar-Rauf Singkil adalah tokoh populer di bidang tasawuf dimana karya-karyanya telah banyak di kaji dan dipelajari khususnya di Indonesia dan Asia Tenggara. Namun khusus dalam bidang ilmu falak, tampaknya karyanya yang berjudul “Risalah fi at-Taqwim” ini belum banyak dikaji oleh para peneliti naskah dan pengkaji sejarah Islam Nusantara. Secara umum, penelitian ini dilakukan dengan langkah-langkah sebagai berikut: (1) melakukan persiapan terhadap penelitian yang akan dilaksanakan, (2) menyiapkan naskah “Risalah fi at-Taqwim” karya Syaikh ‘Abd ar-Rauf Singkil yang merupakan fokus utama penelitian, dan (3) menganalisis naskah yang meliputi biografi pengarang, perkembangan ilmu falak, dan analisis isi naskah (tahqiq).
