"¿En razón de qué lleva este libro por título uno tan genérico como el de Constitucionalismo Latinoamericano cuando tan sólo se trata de un aspecto suyo? Buena pregunta si la lectora o el lector ya se la ha formulado. Hay sólidas exposiciones recientes sobre la evolución de tal constitucionalismo hasta la actualidad que no le prestan relieve a la presencia indígena o también que le abren espacio, pero ninguna naturalmente que erija tal presencia en clave de bóveda. Pido un voto de confianza. Espero que la lectura del conjunto de trabajos aquí reunidos, con lo que los mismos así se potencian entre sí, lleve a tomarse en consideración la posibilidad de que el constitucionalismo latinoamericano se caracterice hoy, ante todo, frente a tantos otros rasgos con los que se le identifica, por tener ubicados a unos perplejos Estados Criollos entre Pueblos Indígenas y Derechos Humanos".

Urban Residence
Riobamba and Cuenca, two intermediate cities in Ecuador, have become part of global networks through transnational migration, incoming remittances, tourism, and global economic connections. Their landscape is changing in several significant ways, a reflection of the social and urban transformations occurring in contemporary Ecuadorian society. Exploring the discourses and actions of two contrasting population groups, rarely studied in tandem, within these cities—popular-settlement residents and professionals in the planning and construction sector—this study analyzes how each is involved in house designs and neighborhood consolidation. Ideas, ambitions, and power relations come into play at every stage of the production and use of urban space, and as a result individual decisions about both house designs and the urban layout influence the development of the urban fabric. Knowledge about intermediate cities is crucial in order to understand current trends in the predominantly urban societies of Latin America, and this study is an example of needed interdisciplinary scholarship that contributes to the fields of urban studies, urban anthropology, sociology, and architecture.

Music, Race, and Nation
Long a favorite on dance floors in Latin America, the porro, cumbia, and vallenato styles that make up Colombia's música tropical are now enjoying international success. How did this music—which has its roots in a black, marginal region of the country—manage, from the 1940s onward, to become so popular in a nation that had prided itself on its white heritage? Peter Wade explores the history of música tropical, analyzing its rise in the context of the development of the broadcast media, rapid urbanization, and regional struggles for power. Using archival sources and oral histories, Wade shows how big band renditions of cumbia and porro in the 1940s and 1950s suggested both old traditions and new liberties, especially for women, speaking to a deeply rooted image of black music as sensuous. Recently, nostalgic, "whitened" versions of música tropical have gained popularity as part of government-sponsored multiculturalism. Wade's fresh look at the way music transforms and is transformed by ideologies of race, nation, sexuality, tradition, and modernity is the first book-length study of Colombian popular music.
