Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) merupakan sebuah model yang mengilustrasikan keterkaitan antara risiko dan return yang diharapkan, model ini diaplikasikan dalam penilaian harga sekuritas. Model CAPM diperkenalkan oleh Treynor, Sharpe (1964) dan Litner (1965). Model ini merupakan penyempurnaan konsep portofolio yang dikemukakan oleh Markowitz dengan memperkenalkan istilah baru yaitu risiko sistematik (systematic risk) dan risiko spesifik/risiko tidak sistematik (spesific risk/unsystematic risk). Pada tahun 1990, William Sharpe memperoleh penghargaan ekonomi atas konsep penentuan harga aset keuangan yang disebut Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM). Menurut Tandelilin (2010:293) Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) merupakan balancing model yang menggambarkan hubungan risiko dan return dengan lebih sederhana, dan hanya memakai satu variabel (disebut juga sebagai variabel beta) untuk menggambarkan risiko. Sedangkan menurut Fahmi (2015:186) Capital Asset Pricing Model menjelaskan tentang hubungan antara imbal hasil (return) dan beta.
