Complex disorders including obesity, diabetes, fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disease and cancer are results from a combination of genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors. The prevalence of such disorders has increased dramatically in the last two decades and there is an urgent need for the development of new prognostic tools for the treatment of such diseases. However, this requires a deep understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in the occurrence of the diseases. With the advances in high throughput technologies, biological components of cells can be measured with a very high resolution and these data can be used for investigating whole systems properties usi...
The emerging precision medicine approach aims to tailor disease prevention and treatment to each patient on the basis of individual variability, environmental factors and lifestyle. Fundamental achievements in the last few decades have converged to offer nowadays the compelling opportunity to move towards this innovative approach: i) unprecedented improvements in disease modeling in silico, in vitro and in vivo; ii) acquisition of a wide range of biomedical information combined with the development of computational toolsets for flexible and integrative analyses of multi-assay datasets. Our deeper understanding of oncogenic mechanisms has finally begun to have a crucial impact on clinical decisions at several steps, from cancer prevention and diagnosis to therapeutic intervention. However, precision oncology still encounters several unresolved hurdles including tumour heterogeneity and recurrence as well as unexplained drug resistance and lack of effective ways to monitor response to therapeutic treatments. Notably, limitations in biomedical research regulation and governance represent additional debatable issues that need careful consideration.
This volume gathers together selected, peer-reviewed papers presented at the BIOMAT 2020 International Symposium, which was virtually held on November 1-6, 2020, with an organization staff based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Topics covered in this volume include infection modeling, with an emphasis on different aspects of the COVID-19 and novel Coronavirus spread; a description of the effectiveness of quarantine measures via dynamic analysis of SLIR model; hemodynamic simulations in time-dependent domains; an optimal control model for the Ebola disease; and the co-existence of chaos and control in the context of biological models. Texts in agroforestry, economic development, and wastewater trea...
Learn the basics—and more—of nanoscale computation and communication in this emerging and interdisciplinary field The field of nanoscale computation and communications systems is a thriving and interdisciplinary research area which has made enormous strides in recent years. A working knowledge of nanonetworks, their conceptual foundations, and their applications is an essential tool for the next generation of scientists and network engineers. Nanonetworks: The Future of Communication and Computation offers a thorough, accessible overview of this subject rooted in extensive research and teaching experience. Offering a concise and intelligible introduction to the key paradigms of nanoscale...
A thorough understanding of pathogenic microorganisms and their interactions with host organisms is crucial to prevent infectious threats due to the fact that Pathogen-Host Interactions (PHIs) have critical roles in initiating and sustaining infections. Therefore, the analysis of infection mechanisms through PHIs is indispensable to identify diagnostic biomarkers and next-generation drug targets and then to develop strategic novel solutions against drug-resistance and for personalized therapy. Traditional approaches are limited in capturing mechanisms of infection since they investigate hosts or pathogens individually. On the other hand, the systems biology approach focuses on the whole PHI ...
