Drugged Out
To penetrate the United States and Britain's markets with illicit drugs, Jamaican traffickers employed diverse and novel transportation methods and techniques in the post-1990 era that were more sophisticated than the trafficking of the 1980's. This transformation was particularly due to traffickers exploiting global processes to enhance their illegal drug industry. In response, Jamaica, America, and Britain have continuously established state-oriented actions aimed at curtailing the cross-border drug trade, thereby reflecting their resilience in combating this problem. This book explores past and present drug trafficking within the context of globalisation and examines state instituted responses to curb this problem. It demystifies the Jamaican, British, and American states' roles in the face of global security threats, such as drug trafficking, arguing that both developed and developing states pursue their national interests and maximize their goals through the exercise of state-power in controlling their territories and protecting their nationals from harm posed by traffickers.

Rural Policing and Policing the Rural
Policing reveals much about rural society. It refers to the way that the police, the public and other agencies regulate themselves and each other according to the dominant ideals of society. This can be formally, through the ever-growing spectrum of policing partnerships in neo-liberal countries, or informally, through the performance and enforcement of moral codes and values. This book draws on international inter-disciplinary perspectives to examine the range and consequences of policing across different rural localities. Rural Policing and Policing the Rural is organised into two sections: the first examines who is policing rural areas, while the second examines the nature of rural policing by considering, on the one hand, the policing of rural space and, on the other, how ideas of rurality are regulated. In doing so this book provides a survey of rural policing that will be valuable to academics, students, policy makers and those policing rural places.
Cultures of Intoxication
This book considers the global discourses and debates about ‘intoxication’, engaging in critical academic discussion around this concept. The problems in defining intoxication are considered, alongside the meanings of intoxication and how these meanings often differ across diverse drug using populations. The way that intoxication has been engaged with over the centuries has affected how particular groups are perceived and responded to, resulting in punitive responses such as drug prohibition, alongside harsh treatment of those who are seen to transgress societal norms and values. Therefore, this collection seeks to unsettle dominant discourses about intoxication and to consider this concept in new, critical ways. Ways of being intoxicated are also defined in this book in their broadest sense; from ‘energy drinks’ and other legal drugs, to recreational use of illicit drugs such as ecstasy, to ‘problematic’ drug use.
