Artige Kunst

The art of the avant-garde, the 'degenerate art', combated by the National Socialists in Germany has been widely researched and exhibited to the public in recent decades. The conformist, 'good' art aligned with National Socialist ideology, in contrast, silently disappeared into warehouses after 1945.Art was supposed to stabilize the system, hearten in difficult times, and communicate values such as a fighting spirit, family, and tradition. This publication knowledgeably shows that the artworks did truly completely lack any critical potential or humanist aspirations. It also documents the inner conflict of the time and juxtaposes works that conformed to the regime with those by critical, persec...

Oskar Kokoschka and the Prague Cultural Scene

At the end of 1934, Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) planned to travel to Prague for ten days in order to produce a portrait of the Czechoslovakian president Tomas Garrigue Masaryk. The original plan developed into a four-year stay. The Austrian Expressionist created more than 30 oil paintings while he was there, including 15 cityscapes of Prague. For the first time a catalogue is dedicated exclusively to Kokoschka's works produced in Czechoslovakia and studies his oeuvre within the political and artistic context of the history of the period.

The Nazi Worker

The Nazi Worker is the second in a three-volume project on the figure of the worker and, by extension, questions of class in twentieth-century German culture. It is based on extensive research in the archives and informed by recent debates on the politics of emotion, the end of class, and the future of work. In seven chapters, the book reconstructs the processes by which National Socialism appropriated aspects of working-class culture and socialist politics and translated class-based identifications into the racialized communitarianism of Volksgemeinschaft (folk community). Arbeitertum (workerdom), the operative term within these processes of appropriation, not only established a discursive ...

Documenting the World

Imagine the twentieth century without photography and film. Its history would be absent of images that defined historical moments and generations. Today such a history feels insubstantial and imprecise, even unscientific. And yet photographic technology was not always a necessary precondition for the accurate documentation of history. The documentary impulse that emerged in the late nineteenth century combined the power of science and industry with a particularly utopian (and often imperialistic) belief in the capacity of photography and film to capture the world visually, order it, and render it useful for future generations. This book is about the material and social life of photographs an...

The internationally active sculptor and performance artist Pawel Althamer (*1967) often works on projects in planned or chance collaborations that attempt to break open socially charged structures. He examines his self-portrait again and again in a spiritual way, free from any concrete religious viewpoints. Althamer broadens the conventional concept of art with unusual techniques, materials, and approaches. Social initiatives determine his artistic program to a significant extent. The publication is published on the occasion of the exhibition connected with Pawel Althamer being awarded the Lovis Corinth Prize in 2022 and is dedicated to his projects so far as well as to new works.
