This book uses visual psychological anthropology to explore trauma, gendered violence, and stigma through a discussion of three ethnographic films set in Indonesia: 40 Years of Silence (Lemelson 2009), Bitter Honey (Lemelson 2015), and Standing on the Edge of a Thorn (Lemelson 2012). Da'wah itu bagai suluh. Suluh tidak datang dengan sendirinya tetapi harus diciptakan lalu diberi sumbu dan diberi minyak sehingga bisa mentemarami bahkan mencahayai, menunjuki mana jalan nan terang dan mana yang gelap. Ketika suluh sudah diciptakan, maka jadikan is sebagai penerang secara bersama-sama, terus suport (ditenagai) juga secara bersama-sama sehingga cahayanya semakin berbinar. Dakwah adalah cinta. Dan cinta akan meminta semuanya dari dirimu. Fikiran hingga perhatianmu. Waktu hingga tenagamu. Berjalan, duduk, dan tidurmu. Bahkan di tengah Ielapmu, isi mimpimu pun tentang umat yang kau cintai. Seperti itulah dakwah. Tentang suluh yang kau bawa. Tentang cahaya yang melentera. Menerangi plan kelam tak berarah. Memberi secercah asa yang dikerah.
