Turkey's Difficult Journey to Democracy

Turkey's Difficult Journey to Democracy provides a thorough examination of the evolution of Turkey's democracy to the present day. After the Second World War, Turkey was considered to have made a highly successful transition from a single party authoritarian state to political competition. Yet, within ten years, Turkey had experienced its first military intervention. During the next forty years, the country vacillated between democratic openings and direct or indirect military interventions. The ascendance in the importance of questions of economic prosperity has helped the deepening and maturing of Turkish democracy, but some impediments persist to produce malfunctions in the operation of a...

The Evolution of the Turkish School Textbooks from Atatürk to Erdogan

This book narrates and analyzes a century of the Turkish education system and textbook indoctrination starting from the foundation of the Republic until today. It divides the history of Turkish education into five periods: Single party government (1923–1950), Menderes' Democrat Party government (1950–1960), the 1960 coup generals and their successors' governments (1960–1980), the Turkish-Islam Synthesis oriented Atatürkist governments (1980–2002) and finally the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government (2002–). By using the content analysis method, this book exposes Kemalism's metamorphosis into "Turkish-Islam Synthesis" influenced Atatürkism. For the first time, Cohen Yana...

Titriyor sesimiz. Yanımızdakine bile duyuramıyoruz sesimizi. Sislerle örülü coğrafyada yazmak hem zorlaşıyor hem daha bir anlam kazanıyor.. Kuşluk saatlerinde alazlanan, ikindi sularını bereketlendiren, her vakit bizi sınayan, kendimiz olmaya çağıran yüce duyguyla yüzleşmeliyiz. Hemen ve daha sıklıkta yüzleşmeliyiz. Zaman ne kadar ilerlemiş olursa olsun, içimizin sur kapılarını her an aralayıp gelecek olana kendimizi hazırlamalıyız. Sanatın, edebiyatın, kültürün izini sürerek bu hazırlığı yürütebiliriz.. Özgür ortamlar sanatın, edebiyatın boyverdiği, geliştiği en güzel yerlerdir. Eğer inanıyorsak, samimi olarak isteğimizi ortaya koyabiliyorsak bunu başarabiliriz.. İnanarak, samimiyetle.. Ve çok çalışarak..

Istanbul at the Threshold of Nation State

During the formation of the Turkish national movement, while Istanbul was under British, French, and Italian occupation, a distinct factional split emerged. One side supported the Ottoman sultanate’s sovereignty, while the other championed a populist, republican path. An Istanbul at the Threshold of Nation State contextualizes this history of coalition, political disintegration, and power struggles in Turkey between 1918 and 1923 to highlight the rise of anti-communist movements and the emergence of national labor and merchant confederations that formed xenophobic, Christian exclusionary policies in the 1920s and 30s.

Communications in Turkey and the Ottoman Empire

De-Westernizing the communications history of Turkey and its imperial predecessor The history of communications in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey contradicts the widespread belief that communications is a byproduct of modern capitalism and other Western forces. Burçe Çelik uses a decolonial perspective to analyze the historical commodification and militarization of communications and how it affected production and practice for oppressed populations like women, the working class, and ethnic and religious minorities. Moving from the mid-nineteenth century through today, Çelik places networks within the changing geopolitical landscape and the evolution of modern capitalism in relationship to struggles involving a range of social and political actors. Throughout, she challenges Anglo- and Eurocentric assumptions that see the non-West as an ahistorical imitation of, or aberration from, the development of Western communications. Ambitious and comprehensive, Communications in Turkey and the Ottoman Empire merges political economy with social history to challenge Western-centered assumptions about the origins and development of modern communications.
