This study deals with the development, existence, and dilemmas concerning European identity among youth in Europe. It compiles the results of a research conducted within the Comenius project "Perception, Attitude, Movement - Identity Needs Action (PAM-INA)." The eight participating institutions in the PAM-INA project were from Germany, Slovenia, France, Greece, Poland, Northern Ireland (UK), Cyprus, and Sweden. This book draws theoretically and methodologically from the sociology of curriculum, educational policy, and comparative education to meta-analyze the findings of nine separate studies exploring constructions of "Europe" in the secondary school curricula of Social Studies from a number of countries: Germany, Greece, France, Poland, Cyprus, Sweden, Ireland, and Northern Ireland, as well as the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country (Spain). The objectives of the book are threefold: first, to explore constructions of "Europe" and "European identity-citizenship" in these countries' curricula; second, to explore whether, and, if so, how these findings indicate a "Europeanization" of national curricula; and third, to discuss the similarities, differences, continuities, discontinuities, and tensions identified when comparing these curricula. Educational institutions should offer a safe and secure environment for young people. Part of that should be educational equity, which is a measure of achievement, fairness, and opportunity in education. This publication analyses and discusses educational equality from different angles. All contributions reflect on the current situation of 11 European countries. Opportunities for developing innovative approaches in teaching and learning geography have been rapidly increasing in recent years. This is in part because of the spread of new technologies that allow access to geographic information and geographic geo-media resources. These new tools offer broad access to information and open data sources. They have revolutionised the way in which teachers of geography can work with pupils and students. “Education for Digital Earth” is now possible. As such, the exclusive use of traditional approaches to the teaching of geography is no longer reasonable today. The European Commission-funded network initiative, digital-earth.eu, promotes innovation and best practices in the implementation of geo-media as a digital learning environment for school learning and teaching. This book, supported by EUROGEO, analyses the main challenges facing geographical education – curriculum, methodology, teacher education and training and geospatial technologies – and illustrates different examples of the use of geoinformation in geographical education in several European countries.
