The book summarizes international progress over the last few decades in upper atmosphere airglow research. Measurement methods, theoretical concepts and empirical models of a wide spectrum of upper atmospheric emissions and their variability are considered. The book contains a detailed bibliography of studies related to the upper atmosphere airglow. Readers will also benefit from a lot of useful information on emission characteristics and its formation processes found the book.

Raylegh's published data on the airglow green line covering an entire sunspot cycle have been little used because of the manner of presentation. These data have been reexamined and the results for the different stations put on a common basis and converted to present-day units. The assumptions and constants used by Rayleigh in his absolute calibration have been carefully checked, with a resulting small change in the absolute intensity that he had reported. Since Rayleigh worked with wide bandpass filters, a discussion of current knowledge of the night-sky continuum and its correlation with the green line has also been included. (Author).
Annals of the International Geophysical Year, Volume 25: Observations of the Night Airglow covers the results from systematic observations of the night airglow during the two and a half year period of the International Geophysical Year and International Geophysical Cooperation (July 1957 through December 1959). Airglow refers to light other than the polar aurora, emitted by the upper atmosphere. This volume is composed of eight chapters that contain a series of tables of hourly values of the absolute zenith intensity of the airglow, arranged according to station and wavelength. The numerical r...
