The Alabama Folk Lyric
Alabamians have always been a singing people. The settlers who moved into the various sections of the state brought with them songs which reflected their national origins and geographical backgrounds, and as they spread into the hills and over the lowlands they created new songs out of the conditions under which they lived. Also, they absorbed songs from outside sources whenever these pieces could be adapted to their sentiments and ways of life. Thus, by a process of memory, composition and recreation they developed a rich body of folk songs. The following collection a part of the effort to discover and preserve these songs.

Winston County, Alabama Newspaper Clippings 1886 - 1900
This book contains newspaper clippings from the earliest Winston County, Alabama newspapers available. The clippings were transcribed from microfilm and from original issues located in the State Archives in Montgomery. Papers include the old Winston Herald, the Herald's political adversary called the Observer, and the successor to the Herald called the New Era. All available issues were studied and all mentions of births, deaths, marriages, and news items important to the history of Winston County were recorded and included in this volume. The book begins with a long and comprehensive essay on the history of newspaper publishing in Winston County. It ends with a full name index. People and Things from the Blount County, Alabama Southern Democrat 1939 - 1942
The Southern Democrat was established by Forney G. Stephens at Blountsville in 1894. After fellow newspaperman Lawrence H. Mathews of the Blount County News-Dispatch died in 1896, Stephens moved the Democrat to Oneonta. When the News-Dispatch folded in 1903, the Democrat was the preeminent Blount County newspaper. Stephens died in 1939, but the Democrat continued to publish in Oneonta for almost 100 years. In 1989 the old Southern Democrat was renamed the Blount Countian. Microfilm for the old Southern Democrat was acquired from the State Archives in Montgomery and studied page by page. Every mention of births, marriages, deaths, obituaries and news important to the history and development of Blount County was reproduced here. This book is vital for any serious student of Blount County, Alabama genealogy and history.
