Oil and Gas Exploration and Production

Oil and Gas Exploration and Production

The steps that lead to the production of oil and gas are diverse, complex and costly. They are diverse because the detection of oil and gas involves input from many specialties, ranging from geology to reservoir engineering. They are complex, as shown by the development of the job of the petroleum architect, who coordinates all the operations. They are costly, as the investments for exploration and production represent more than half of all investments in the oil and gas sector. Moreover, exploration is a risky activity, both from the technical and financial viewpoint: only one well in five produces marketable oil. Meanwhile, the areas for exploration and production are spread throughout the world.

Oil Exploration, Diplomacy, and Security in the Early Cold War

Oil Exploration, Diplomacy, and Security in the Early Cold War

The importance of oil for national military-industrial complexes appeared more clearly than ever in the Cold War. This volume argues that the confidential acquisition of geoscientific knowledge was paramount for states, not only to provide for their own energy needs, but also to buttress national economic and geostrategic interests and protect energy security. By investigating the postwar rebuilding and expansion of French and Italian oil industries from the second half of the 1940s to the early 1960s, this book shows how successive administrations in those countries devised strategies of oil exploration and transport, aiming at achieving a higher degree of energy autonomy and setting up powerful oil agencies that could implement those strategies. However, both within and outside their national territories, these two European countries had to confront the new Cold War balances and the interests of the two superpowers.

Dynamics and Methods of Study of Sedimentary Basins

This book contains 21 contributions, each written by an expert in the area of sedimentary basins. The first part of the book is devoted to the methodology used for these studies, in particular physical measurements (well-logging and seismic) and synthesis of subsurface data. The second part presents specific cases, each corresponding to a particular type of basin.

The Future of Oil as a Source of Energy

This book examines various aspects of the future of oil as a source of energy, including future oil supply, oil demand and market stability. It reflects the analysis and assessments of the energy experts who gathered at the ECSSR's Sixth Annual Energy Conference, entitled The Future of Oil as a Source of Energy. Although the future supply of oil is difficult to forecast due to many uncertainties around production and reserve data, it is estimated that oil from the Gulf and other non-syndicated oil producing regions will form the larger part of global oil supplies after 2010. The volume also explores the potential of alternative energy sources like gas, hydrogen and renewable sources. Despite...

Oil, Power, and War

The story of oil is one of hubris, fortune, betrayal, and destruction. It is the story of a resource that has been undeniably central to the creation of our modern culture, and ever-present during the darkest exploits of empire the world over. For the past 150 years, oil has become the most essential ingredient for economic, military, and political power. And it has brought us to our present moment in which political leaders and the fossil-fuel industry consider extraordinary, and extraordinarily dangerous, policy on a world stage marked by shifting power bases. Upending the conventional wisdom by crafting a “people’s history,” award-winning journalist Matthieu Auzanneau deftly traces ...
