Je suis revenu à Dar es-Sallam en avril 1997. J'ai rencontré plusieurs fois Ebrahim Hussein. Je lui ai montré mes traductions et remis copie de l'édition en français et en italien de son poème sur le mur de Berlin. Nous avons continué nos promenades. C'est à l'occasion de l'une d'elles que j'ai pris les photos qui illustrent cet ouvrage. Ebrahim était content de voir son poème sur Berlin imprimé. Il était souvent enjoué ; nous avons retrouvé des lieux de rencontre du Dar des années soixante : la terrasse du Palm Beach, par exemple. Les garçons l'ont reconnu et cela lui a donné un coup de cafard. Il continue à travailler pour Oxford University Press : il lit des manuscrits, fait des traductions. Il m'a donné deux nouveaux poèmes. Je voulais aller à Kilwa avec lui, mais cela ne l'intéressait pas de revenir là-bas. Il ne veut toujours pas quitter le pays, par peur d'ennuis à la frontière. Pourtant il y a un nouveau président, plusieurs partis, une atmosphère non-chalante et paisible et ses craintes paraissent bien peu fondées.
