The bulk of the collection are letters to Alan Lindsey McLeod, 1964-1986, and from his wife, Frances Warner, to Alan and Marian McLeod, 1986-1997. McLeod began a professional relationship with Warner in 1964 that became a personal one in 1968 after they met in person.

An early admirer and critic of Howarth's poetry indicated that he had commenced writing verse at the age of seven. He had apparently continued in this avocation, for in his first year at Fort Street he was awarded the prize of one guinea, donated by the headmaster, for the best School song.
