Variations on a Haunting Theme

What begins as a seemingly innocent invitation to dinner from a relative stranger turns into something more sinister. Persuaded to stay for three days in the stranger’s isolated house, the guest hears six bizarre stories of people known to the host. The last of these chilling tales concerns the host himself and has an alarming ending. When the guest returns to his own home, the tales he’s heard continue to haunt him and where they lead makes his own story the strangest of all.

Excerpt--A look into the past: A consistent effort to destroy the natural environment, with a cultural influence that clashed with the Native American way of life, presently continues from European arrival. When we see land ¡°developers,¡± supported by government-funded contracts and zoning laws that accommodate turning land into urban sprawl, we are still witnessing today the European take-over of Native America. Sharing the same destiny with the Indians and the buffalo, large unaltered areas of our native land will soon be gone too. The recent expanded powers of eminent domain, allowing a large private company/corporation to take land from a smaller private party, supports the exploita...

Jesus never wrote a book. Most scholars assume that information about Jesus was preserved only orally up until the writing of the Gospels, allowing ample time for the stories of Jesus to grow and diversify. Alan Millard here argues that written reports about Jesus could have been made during his lifetime and that some among his audiences and followers may very well have kept notes, first-hand documents that the Evangelists could weave into their narratives.

Write That They May Read is a collection of essays written in honor of our mentor, friend, and fellow scholar, Professor Alan R. Millard. Respectful of his contribution to our understanding of writing and literacy in the ancient biblical world, all the essays deal with some aspect of this issue, ranging in scope from archeological artifacts that need to be ""read,"" to early evidence of writing in Israel's world, to the significance of reading and writing in the Bible, including God's own literacy, to the production of books in the ancient world, and the significance of metaphorical branding of God's people with his name. The contributors are distributed among Professor Millard's peers and colleagues in a variety of institutions, his own students, and students of his students. They represent a variety of disciplines including biblical archeology, Egyptology, Assyriology, Hebrew and other Northwest Semitic texts, and the literature of the Bible, and reside in North America, Japan, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Germany.
