The idea for this book arose in 1993, after the Free State of Bavaria through its Bayrisches Staatsministerium rur Landesentwicklung und Umweltfragen (Bavarian Ministry of Regional Development and the Environment) decided to discontinue both the Bavarian project management (PBWU) for forest decline research and the multidisciplinary field research on the Wank Mountain in the Alps near Garmisch. This volume summarizes the current knowledge on the exchange of trace gases between forests and the atmosphere with the restriction that exclusively carbon and nitrogen compounds are included. For this purpose the volume brings together and interconnects knowledge from different disciplines of biological and atmospheric sciences. It covers microbial and plant processes involved in the production and consumption of these trace gases; the exchange processes between forest soils and vegetation on the one hand, and the atmosphere on the other hand; the fate of the trace gases exchanged inside the atmosphere as well as environmental influences on the exchange of trace gases between forest ecosystems and the atmosphere. With this interdisciplinary approach the volume provides the background for an evaluation of the exchange of trace gases between forest ecosystems and the atmosphere and man-made disturbances of this exchange.

In an attempt to improve communication between disciplines in this field, we have aimed to cover what we perceive to be all relevant aspects of photooxidative stress: from primary reactions to molecular genetics and the devising of strategies for engineering stress tolerance in plants. We hope to achieve a forum for new ideas, concepts, and approaches. The intellectual challenge also arose because we wished to produce a work that was accessible to both specialist and nonspecialist. We have encouraged our authors to provide personal perspectives of their topics while discussing them in depth. To this end, the nonspecialist will find that some chapters include relatively simple introductions and conclusions, e.g., Foyer and Harbinson (Chapter 1); Gressel and Galun (Chapter 10).
