Most books about Jesus and the Gospels deal with texts, background, culture and authorial intentions. A new approach to the Gospels called Practice Interpretation puts the emphasis on the actual happenings behind the Gospel stories – on what first hearers might have made of them, and on what contemporary disciples today make of them. The concern of the studies in this series is with the "use" of a Gospel story by disciples today, and of its "influence" on them. In this ground-breaking collection, the first in the Practice Interpretation series, people from many different situations describe what the story of Jesus Stilling the Storm actually "sparked off" in their lives.

Practice Interpretation takes the everyday social conditions of people as they are described in the Bible and looks at emerging issues that confront today’s interpreters in daily life. This volume in the Practice Interpretation series deals with the Farewell Discourses of Jesus in the Gospel of John. The key element and dynamic in the Johannine practice reflections in this volume is that John’s Gospel sometimes explicitly, often implicitly, sets forth a continuing Jesus-style practice by Jesus’ followers, in the gospel time, in the longer term behaviour of early Christian communities, and in contemporary Christian disciples and communities today. Each contributor indicates this at work in very different contexts and happenings. James, Brother of Jesus, and the Jerusalem Church
James, Brother of Jesus, and the Jerusalem Church opens fresh ground in our understanding of Christian origins through an exploration of the role of James in the founding of the church. Based on the author's doctoral research, that first Christian church, with its roots in the Baptist movement, is shown to be part of the broad contemporary Judaic movement for the restoration of Israel. The events surrounding the death of Jesus (their leader's brother) both confirmed their commitment to Judaic reform and transformed their understanding of it. Despite the impact of that experience, they seem to have had neither knowledge nor interest in the teaching and ministry of Jesus in Galilee. Set in the world of James, this careful study of the difficulties and opportunities facing Judaic peasants in first-century Palestine proposes that James and his other brothers moved to Jerusalem (where work was available) several years before the final visit of Jesus and, under James's leadership, became the kernel of a growing group of followers of the Baptist that would later emerge onto the page of history as the Jerusalem Church.

Through Jesus the Messiah and the power of the Spirit, Paul saw fulfilled Isaiah’s vision of Israel’s destiny to the nations to bring the good news of salvation. Recapturing Isaiah’s vision broke the spell for Paul of the Great Assembly’s postexilic take on Israel. Paul’s apostleship first and foremost was to Israel, not gentiles exclusively. Paul used his exposé of the gospel of God in Romans to challenge believers in Rome to embrace their place in the messianic Israel of God.

Members of the Bogainn MacDonald and Clann Sheumais MacDonald families came from Scotland to Nova Scotia about 1790. Family members trace their lineage back to one of these members of the MacDonald clan; John, Angus, Rory Ban, Alasdair, Ranald, and Donald Ban who all settled in Nova Scotia before 1800. Descendants of thes men are included in the material found in this book.
Carbonatite Volcanism
During the last few years, carbonatites have received a considerable amount of attention. Some of this interest was no doubt kindled by the importance of volatiles in the Earth's mantle, particularly CO , by the fact that carbonatites 2 can be used to monitor the chemical evolution of the sub-continental upper mantle, and by the fact that carbonatites may be effective metasomatizing agents at both mantle and crustal levels. The interest in Oldoinyo Lengai has extended over at least 100 years, but it was not until the eruptions of 1960, when the unique carbonatitic nature of its lavas was recognized, that the volcano took on special significance in volcanology and igneous petrology. The recognition of carbonatitic flows coin cided with the first successful laboratory experiments carried out on carbonatitic melts. Since then, Oldoinyo Lengai has formed a cornerstone in all carbonatite discussions. It is probably true to say that the findings from Oldoinyo Lengai have dominated our ideas about carbonatites, in spite of the fact that the alkali rich, natrocarbonatitic lavas of Oldoinyo Lengai are markedly different from other carbonatites.
