Albert Roussel, a Study

This book, the first in English on Albert Roussel, supplies an urgent need. It deals with the life and work of the modern French composer who, after Debussy, Ravel and Fauré, has achieved the greatest prominence in recent years. Since his death, in 1937, Roussel's fame has grown steadily beyond the confines of his native land. Such works as the Third and Fourth Symphonies and "Le Festin de l'Araignée" are fast establishing themselves in the permanent repertoire of famous orchestras. Concert and radio audiences are becoming increasingly familiar with this music, and a book intended for the interest and guidance of such a public would seem to be assured of a wide welcome. The author was a professor of composition at the Royal Academy of Music and needs no introduction as a composer. His practical experience as teacher and creative artist qualifies him admirably to deal with his subject, bringing a discerning critical faculty to bear on his general enthusiasm for this music.

Although recognized as one of the greatest French composers of the twentieth century, Albert Roussel (1869-1937) has been frequently overlooked in recent years. However, the publication of this bibliography coincides with a renewed interest, especially in Roussel's native land, in recording his compositions. While the majority of English-language works on Roussel have concentrated on the details of his life or attempted to define and analyze his compositional style, this first annotated bibliography and discography focuses on his opus and provides copious information about specific works, performances, recordings, and reviews. Born in Tourcoing, France, Roussel received recognition for his c...

The Composer As Intellectual

In The Composer as Intellectual, musicologist Jane Fulcher reveals the extent to which leading French composers between the World Wars were not only aware of but also engaged intellectually and creatively with the central political and ideological issues of the period. Employing recent sociological and historical insights, she demonstrates the extent to which composers, particularly those in Paris since the Dreyfus Affair, considered themselves and were considered to be intellectuals, and interacted closely with intellectuals in other fields. Their consciousness raised by the First World War and the xenophobic nationalism of official culture, some joined parties or movements, allying themsel...
