Introduction To Metabolic And Cellular Engineering, An (Second Edition)

Metabolic and Cellular Engineering (MCE) is more than an exciting scientific enterprise. It has become the cornerstone for coping with the challenges ahead of mankind. Continuous developments, new concepts, and technological innovations will enable us to deal with emerging challenges, and solve problems once thought impossible ten years ago. Challenges in MCE are broad- from unraveling fundamental aspects of cellular function to meeting unsatiated energy and food demands that are rising in parallel with population growth. In charting the progress of MCE during the last decade, we could not help but feel in awe of the enormous strides of progress made from the nascent Metabolic Engineering to ...

An Introduction To Metabolic And Cellular Engineering

Metabolic and cellular engineering, as presented in this book, is a powerful alliance of two technologies: genetics-molecular biology and fermentation technology. Both are driven by continuous refinement of the basic understanding of metabolism, physiology and cellular biology (growth, division, differentiation), as well as the development of new mathematical modeling techniques. The authors' approach is original in that it integrates several disciplines into a coordinated scheme, i.e. microbial physiology and bioenergetics, thermodynamics and enzyme kinetics, biomathematics and biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology. Thus, it is called a transdisciplinary approach (TDA). The TDA provides the basis for the rational design of microorganisms or cells in a way that has rarely been utilized to its full extent.

Liquid Sculpture

"Can a sculpture be a river? Can contemporary art unite conflicting systems of belief? Do other species appreciate culture? And can public art revive communities and ecosystems? Cristina Iglesias' horizontal fountains, submerged rooms and tropical mazes bring together language, architecture and botany to create immersive spaces of contemplation. In this publication an international roster of curators, art critics, philosophers, architects and scientists discuss the social and ecological potential of art in urban and rural space. Spanish artist CRISTINA IGLESIAS (*1956) creates profound spaces of the imagination. Renowned for her sculptures woven, cast or constructed from metal, wood and alabaster, Iglesias also creates outdoor structures and installations using water. Her work can be found in inner cities or remote islands, as a site of pilgrimage for humans or as a habitat for animals."--Page 4 de la couverture

Drought

Comprehensive coverage of understanding, prevention, and risk management of extreme drought events, with examples of approaches followed in water-stressed regions This book describes the progress made in our understanding of severe drought and explains how we can deal with—and even avoid—complete devastation brought on by such punishing events. It brings forward advanced knowledge on drought hazard analysis and management, particularly from EU-funded research projects, to assist in the development of the corresponding drought management plans. In addition, this book addresses issues of social vulnerability to drought and science-policy interfaces, which are important elements of drought ...

How to Gain a Positively Unfair Advantage on the River - Even if You're Unsure what the MANY Variations of "Euro Nymphing" Actually Involve... INCLUDING Over 2 hours of supporting video material (designed to be worth the price of the book on its own) Hands up who knows what Euro nymphing is? It's incredibly popular and causes many online arguments - yet most anglers show CLEAR GAPS in their skills and knowledge. So if you want to go beyond bobbers and split shot, you'll need to dodge an overwhelming tide of BS online covering "Tight Line Nymphing" and European competition methods. While there are good books available, certain tactics are left out (keeping a number of methods known only to a ...
