Sons of Garibaldi in Blue and Gray

Not much has been written about the Italian immigrant experience prior to 1880. This book, through careful analysis of primary and archival sources, brings to life the Civil War-time trials and tribulations of several notable Italian Americans--Bancroft Gherardi, Luigi Palma di Cesnola, Francis B. Spinola, Decimus et Ultimus Barziza, and Edward Ferrero, among others. Though their numbers were few, Italian Americans played central roles in the bloodiest war in our country's history. Included in this book are samples of John Garibaldi's wartime correspondence to his wife, lists of Italian Americans who served as officers and noncommissioned sailors in the Union Navy, and first-hand correspondence of William Howell Reed (Virginia hospitals overseer under President Grant) and the brother of a young Italian who died in the hospital during the war. Sons of Garibaldi in Blue and Gray fills a critical gap in studies of Italian American life in the United States in the late 1800s.

International Expatriate Employment Handbook

  • Categories: Law

More and more multinational companies are deploying key employees around the globe to serve the increasing international business needs of the multinational, its global markets, and its customers. The ability to relocate employees quickly from one location to another, and the ability of those employees to quickly focus on the business objectives of the company once they are relocated, can often determine the success of a new regional operation or an entire global strategy. It is crucial for employers to avoid unexpected barriers or difficulties in the form of employment-related issues. This enormously valuable handbook is the ideal solution to such problems, both in the anticipation and in t...

The Tachykinin Receptors

Offers a state-of-the-art review by international experts on all aspects of tachykinin receptors, including neuropeptide/peptide and G-protein-linked receptors in general. It covers the physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, and molecular biology of these receptors from both clinical and basic research points of view. Topics treated by the distinguished contributors include the characterization of tachykinin receptors, the mechanisms of tachykinin receptor action, a reflection on future prospects, and a historical consideration of tachykinin research.

Cellular Mechanisms of Sensory Processing

The research field of somatosensory processing in mammals has experienced revolutionary changes in recent years. Accumulation of basic and clinical data has greatly accelerated, and new phenomena have emerged. With the aid of new, refined methods, molecular and cellular changes have been described, underlying the signal transduction-transmission between the internal/external environment and the central nervous system have been described. The discovery of the interaction between the nervous and the immune system has, for example changed our view on the development of inflammatory diseases, while the cloning of genes encoding different trophic factors has boosted studies revealing profound cha...

Neurobiology of Incontinence

Neurobiology of Incontinence

Incontinence is a very common and often devastating problem, but one that goes largely unacknowledged. In order to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of this major clinical condition, this symposium brought together neuroscientists working on the basic biology of the bladder and bowel and clinicians dealing with the various manifestations of urinary and fecal incontinence. The resulting coverage is broad and includes papers on the innervation and functional anatomy of the urinary tract and anorectal region, and the central neural control of these areas. Other contributions discuss the functional assessment of the anorectum and bladder, stress incontinence and the neurogenic hypothesis of incontinence, detrusor-external sphincter dyssynergia, and pharmacological and surgical approaches to treatment.
