Role of Endophytes in Plant Health and Defense Against Pathogens

This eBook is a collection of articles from a Frontiers Research Topic. Frontiers Research Topics are very popular trademarks of the Frontiers Journals Series: they are collections of at least ten articles, all centered on a particular subject. With their unique mix of varied contributions from Original Research to Review Articles, Frontiers Research Topics unify the most influential researchers, the latest key findings and historical advances in a hot research area! Find out more on how to host your own Frontiers Research Topic or contribute to one as an author by contacting the Frontiers Editorial Office: frontiersin.org/about/contact.

Evolutionary Trajectories in Plant-Associated Pseudomonas and Xanthomonas Strains

Evolutionary Trajectories in Plant-Associated Pseudomonas and Xanthomonas Strains

The strict relationships between bacteria and plants represents one of the major facets of terrestrial ecology. Depending on the type of interaction and amount of metabolic advantage one organism can obtain from such relationships, these are classified as mutualistic, commensal or parasitic interactions. Within this context, Pseudomonas and Xanthomonas are bacterial genera with a worldwide spread, capable of establishing all of the above mentioned interactions with plants. Therefore, they represent good models for studying different lifestyles and, accordingly, deciphering distinct evolutionary trajectories followed by different lineages of a single genus to infect and/or to establish a mutualistic relationships with the plant. Some members of these two genera are regulated pests that are recognized as economically major threats for their host crop(s) both in temperate and tropical environments.

Integrated Management of Diseases Caused by Fungi, Phytoplasma and Bacteria

This volume focuses on integrated pest and disease management (IPM/IDM) and biocontrol of some key diseases of perennial and annual crops. It continues a series originated during a visit of prof. K. G. Mukerji to the CNR Plant Protection Institute in Bari (Italy), in November 2005. Both editors aim at a series of five volumes embracing, in a multi-disciplinary approach, advances and achievements in the practice of crop protection, for a wide range of plant parasites and pathogens. Two volumes of the series were already produced, dedicated to general concepts in IPM and to management and biocontrol of nematodes of grain crops and vegetables. This Volume deals, in particular, with diseases due...

Molecular Interactions Between Bacterial Pathogens and Plants: Selected Contributions to the 14th International Conference on Plant Pathogenic Bacteria (14th ICPPB)

This Research Topic is dedicated In Memoriam of Dr. Nicola Sante Iacobellis who contributed to the conception of this article collection † This Research Topic collects the selected contributions to the 14th International Conference on Plant Pathogenic Bacteria (14th ICPPB), “The Impact of Plant Pathogenic Bacteria on Global Plant Health”, which was held in Assisi (Italy) from July 3 to 8, 2022. Occurrence of bacterial disease in plant is the result of complex interaction between host, bacterium and environment. The mechanisms by which bacteria cause shifts in the biochemical and physiological processes required for the plant life cycle as well as the mechanisms by which hosts prevent or respond or defend against attack by bacteria are the central themes of this Research Topic.

Pseudomonas Syringae Pathovars and Related Pathogens

During the last decade, research on Pseudomonas syringae pathovars and related pathogens has progressed rapidly, opening up many new avenues. The application of molecular genetics has provided new insights into determinants of pathogenicity and virulence. Progress has also been made in elucidating the chemical structures and modes of action of phytotoxins from Pseudomonas syringae; by establishing novel strategies for disease control; in biotechnological applications; by studying the resistant reaction of the plant with a combined biochemical and genetic approach; and in the development of new detection and identification methodologies as tools in epidemiological studies. With such rapid adv...

Disease Control in Crops

The control of diseases in crops is still largely dominated by theuse of fungicides, but with the increasing incidence of fungicideresistance, plus mounting concern for the environment resultingfrom excessive agrochemical use, the search for alternative, reliable methods of disease control is gaining momentum. The purpose of this important book is to examine the developmentand exploitation (or potential for exploitation) of a range ofnon-chemical approaches to disease control, with a focus on theneed for a greater understanding of crop ecology as the basis foreffective disease control in the field. Chapters in the book, written by international experts in the subject area, includecoverage of: ...

Bacteriophages

This first major reference work dedicated to the mannifold industrial and medical applications of bacteriophages provides both theoretical and practical insights into the emerging field of bacteriophage biotechnology. The book introduces to bacteriophage biology, ecology and history and reviews the latest technologies and tools in bacteriophage detection, strain optimization and nanotechnology. Usage of bacteriophages in food safety, agriculture, and different therapeutic areas is discussed in detail. This book serves as essential guide for researchers in applied microbiology, biotechnology and medicine coming from both academia and industry.
