This monograph covers phenomena of deformation and machining of granular media: macroscopic particles of different size, shape, and surface properties which typically exhibit behavior similar to fluids, as well as the behavior of solids under deformation. The book analyses the behavior of granular media in soils, rocks and stones, metals and various synthetic materials, presenting a theoretical description, applications and understanding of basic phenomena in granular matter.
This book is the result of collaboration within the frames of the 5th International Conference "Trigger Effects in Geosystems" held in the Institute of Geosphere Dynamics of Russian Academy of Sciences, June 2019. This book aims to raise awareness about different triggering aspects in the geosphere and its effects. The conference provided a multidisciplinary platform with a focus on (i) the influence of natural and anthropogenic factors on the geosphere, geomechanical systems and anthropogenic objects found in a subcritical state and (ii) the influence of these factors on the system “atmosphere - ionosphere”. The problems considered in the book may be interesting for a wide audience including students, professionals, researches, and for the industry.
How can we make sense of change and stability through the lifespan of human development? What role does personal experience, our relationships with others, and historical and sociocultural contexts play in shaping these changes? This is the first book to offer an integrative overview of the range of developmental transitions which occur through the lifespan. Bringing together different theoretical and conceptual perspectives and a broad range of empirical research including quantitative and qualitative approaches, this book encompasses a range of complex transitional forms. Covering topics such as health transitions, transitions in friendships and romantic relationships, career transitions, ...
From the fan motor in your PC to precision control of aircraft, electrical machines of all sizes, varieties, and levels of complexity permeate our world. Some are very simple, while others require exacting and application-specific design. Electrical Machine Analysis Using Finite Elements provides the tools necessary for the analysis and design of any type of electrical machine by integrating mathematical/numerical techniques with analytical and design methodologies. Building successively from simple to complex analyses, this book leads you step-by-step through the procedures and illustrates their implementation with examples of both traditional and innovative machines. Although the examples ...

This textbook compiles reports written by about 35 internationally recognized authorities, and covers a range of interests for geotechnical engineers. Topics include: fundamentals for mechanics of granular materials; continuum theory of granular materials; and discrete element approaches.
This book is essentially made up of the lecture notes delivered by seven authors at the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences in Udine in June 1979. It attempts to provide an up-to-date and concise summary of the authors' understanding of micropolar materials. Both asymmetric elasticity and fluids are covered. The chapters range from the discussion of micropolar molecular models to the analysis of structure models, from linear to nonlinear theories and from electromagnetic, thermal, viscous effects to lattice defects. The subjects are treated from both theoretical and experimental points of view. Students with physics, mathematics and mechanical backgrounds as well as professionals will find this treatise useful for study and reference.

This book examines the experimental and theoretical aspects of bifurcation analysis as applied to geomechanics. Coverage includes basic continuum mechanics for dry and fluid unfiltrated porous media, bifurcation and stability analyses applied to layered geological media and granular materials, and theories for generalized continua as applied to materials with microstructure and in relation to strain localization phenomena.
