The book investigates English and Slovene onomastic phraseological units (PUs), and is based on two databases containing English and Slovene PUs with anthroponyms, toponyms and their derivatives. These databases were created using monolingual English and Slovene phraseological dictionaries. The volume provides in-depth, cross-linguistic and cross-cultural research into this segment of phraseology, and represents the most extensive treatment of any contrastive topic involving Slovene and a foreign language. As such, it will serve to be a useful source of information for scholars of Slavonic and other languages, as well as anyone interested in phraseology, cultural specificity, etymology, translation equivalence, and the stereotypical use of ethnonyms.

Der Neuplatoniker Olympiodor (6. Jh. n.
Despite the great number and diversity of specialised dictionaries and terminologies, several major issues of specialised lexicography still remain unresolved. The articles in this volume intend to discuss and resolve such open questions and, at the same time, spawn further research.
The dictionary example is the culminating component of the information presented in articles of dictionaries intended for language learning. This study analyses the example comprehensively: its provenance, its theoretical status, its distinction from multiword lexical units (to be presented as infralemmas), types and specific functions. The example not only illustrates the data provided by the definition, the equivalent, the grammatical, collocational and pragmatic items, but also provides valuable complementary information on the use of each lexical unit described. Examples are models with which users can form other sentences but are also instantiations of the language that escape systematicity and reflect unpredictable but real uses. Theoretical reflection on the theory of the example (with special emphasis on the bilingual), analysis of how (especially bilingual) dictionaries present examples and what kind of information each type of example provides can assist lexicographers in planning their dictionaries and making theoretically based choices when it comes to the selection and presentation of examples.
V njih podajamo pregled razvoja slovenske frazeologije in njenih prvih slovarskih poskusov, razkrivamo skrivnosti frazeološkega pomena, problematiziramo frazeološko zgradbo v najširšem smislu in iščemo poti do frazeologije drugih jezikov in narodov.
This volume explores English Studies from the perspective of linguistics and applied linguistics. By examining developments within their selected topics, the authors of these 18 chapters provide a broad overview of English Studies as related to their specific points of interest. Topics range from the well-established, such as negation, grammaticalization, and the role of culture in learning English, to those that are currently being revisited or are considered relatively new, such as corpus analysis, English as a lingua franca, and third language acquisition. The chapters reflect a modern approach to linguistic and applied linguistic phenomena, including diachronic and synchronic perspectives, as well as quantitative and qualitative research paradigms. English Studies as practiced at the English Department in Zagreb during the last 80 years, the anniversary of which instigated the invitation of contributions for this collection, are presented here as a vibrant field, characterized by dynamics and complexities that introduce novel ideas, and help us embrace emerging aspects of more established concepts.
This book is for students who have learned English as a second (or third, or forth) language and are studying at an institution where English is the medium of instruction. Each of the book’s 10 chapters focuses on a reproduced academic article on an aspect of English for academic purposes. Therefore, students can learn about language skills from the articles themselves, as well as develop those skills in the activities and tasks which follow. A companion website features a collection of articles from a variety of different sources related to the topics in each of the book’s 10 articles.
