Two tales of dastardly foreigners turning good British boys into gelded girls. In The Secret Of The Market devious French ladies and men turn a boy student into a studious maid. Betrayed by his hero, into a House of women, he is enslaved as the ladies maid to the most humble maiden there-only finally to be brutally used and abused by the traitor hero. In On The Farm some good 'ole American boys turn their visiting boy cousin into a fit and blushing American bride. He's not much use as a cowboy, but handy for more than just cooking cleaning and serving food in the house. So if it walks like a girl, talks like a girl, acts like a girl ....
Four short stories of boys encouraged, or forced into the role of girlie-bois. In the first long story that inspired the book title, a woman of wealth and power leads a geeky student down a clearly well-worn path to being her girlie slave, with the help of her brother and other men of power. A group of girls chasing men, force a studious boy to become one of them, to be a girl for the men they covet and attract. A policeman finds himself strangely attracted to the quiet and effeminate boy he arrests for drug dealing. A girl pop star takes a boy to be her very own girlie-boi.
The Mogao Grottoes, a World Heritage Site in northwestern China, are located along the ancient caravan routes—collectively known as the Silk Road—that once linked China with the West. Founded by a Buddhist monk in the late fourth century, Mogao flourished over the following millennium, as monks, local rulers, and travelers commissioned hundreds of cave temples cut into a mile-long rock cliff and adorned them with vibrant murals. More than 490 decorated grottoes remain, containing thousands of sculptures and some 45,000 square meters of wall paintings, making Mogao one of the world’s most significant sites of Buddhist art. In 1997 the Getty Conservation Institute, which had been working with the Dunhuang Academy since 1989, began a case study using the Late–Tang dynasty Cave 85 to develop a methodology that would stabilize the deteriorating wall paintings. This abundantly illustrated volume is the definitive report on the project, which was completed in 2010.
Wherever heavy metal has gone, heavy metal movies have followed, blazing ferocious new celluloid trails; from concert movies and trippy midnight flicks at the dawn of "heaviosity" through inspirational depictions of ancient times and future apocalypses to the raw hand-held video productions of today. "Heavy Metal Movies" rounds up, reviews, and canonizes all known incidents of the heavy metal in motion pictures, from performance films, feature documentaries, occult rock 'n' roll horror, and headbanger characters to soundtrack standouts, namesake inspirations, lyrical references, aesthetic archetypes, and more. As brash, irreverent, and visceral as both the music and the movies themselves, "Heavy Metal Movies" is the ultimate guidebook to the complete molten musical cinema experience.
The link between modern lifestyles and increasing levels of chronic heart disease, obesity, stress and poor mental health is a concern across the world. The cost of dealing with these conditions places a large burden on national public health budgets so that policymakers are increasingly looking at prevention as a cost-effective alternative to medical treatment. Attention is turning towards interactions between the environment and lifestyles. Exploring the relationships between health, natural environments in general, and forests in particular, this groundbreaking book is the outcome of the European Union’s COST Action E39 ‘Forests, Trees and Human Health and Wellbeing’, and draws together work carried out over four years by scientists from 25 countries working in the fields of forestry, health, environment and social sciences. While the focus is primarily on health priorities defined within Europe, this volume explicitly draws also on research from North America.
