Es ist die zweite Auflage des 1986 erstmals erschienenen „Heidelberger Gelehrtenlexikon 1803–1932“ und stellt den Vorläufer- sowie Fortsetzungsband der bereits publizierten Heidelberger Gelehrtenlexika 1386–1651, 1652–1802 und 1933–1986 dar. Die Eckdaten 1803 und 1932 markieren zum einen den Übergang der bisherigen pfälzischen Universität an Baden und der Reorganisation der Universität ab 1803 sowie zum anderen die nachhaltige Veränderung des wissenschaftlich-geistigen Profils der Ruperto-Carola durch die „Säuberung“ des Dritten Reichs nach 1932. Aufbau und Anlage der Biographien bleiben auch in der 2. Auflage – wie in den bereits erschienenen Gelehrtenlexika – unverändert.
