Bare

Poetry is certainly a form of art that I appreciate. When I want to express myself, I write on paper, and then I read my words out loud. What I love most about poetry is that it has no boundaries, and I personally believe that freedom of expression is poetry's best friend. Poetry allows me to evolve in so many ways and challenges me to learn more and create art for the mind. Sometimes I'm at a loss for words to write; at times it takes minutes, hours, days, and months for me to write a new piece. Just like any relationship, poetry requires patience, dedication, and understanding. Anyone can write a poem if they put their mind to it, but to write continuous poetry, you need the passion for it. Some may view my work as prose or spoken word; to me personally they all come from the same family, so if you are probably wondering what I write, I write poetry.

Letters to My Father

This book tells the autobiography of my father, his years in Haiti, and his transition as an immigrant in foreign lands. He tells this story in a narrative to inform his deceased father about his life. In his prime years, his dad caresses the hem of his mother's skirt, expressing how close the pair were. A Grammar of Mavea

Spoken on Mavea Island by approximately 32 people, Mavea is an endangered Oceanic language of Vanuatu. This work provides grammatical descriptions of this hitherto undescribed language. Fourteen chapters, containing more than 1,400 examples, cover topics in the phonology and morphosyntax of Mavea, with an emphasis on the latter. Of particular interest are examples of individual speaker variation presented throughout the grammar; the presence of three linguo-labials (still used today by a single speaker) that were unexpectedly found before the rounded vowel /o/; and a chapter on numerals and the counting system, which have long been replaced by Bislama’s but are remembered by a handful of speakers. Most of the grammatical descriptions derive from a corpus of texts of various genres (conversations, traditional stories, personal histories, etc.) gathered during the author’s fieldwork, conducted for eleven months between 2005 and 2007.

The Dynamics of Language

Linguistics – the close study of language and languages – is an indispensable foundation for all forms of knowledge. The African continent is blessed with hundreds of languages which act as local repositories of culture and interaction. South Africa alone has eleven official languages, plus Sign Language, many heritage languages, and new languages of global movements and migration. Part of the linguist’s business is to document, record and affirm languages and diversity. Applied linguists use their training to understand and enhance the role of language in education and upliftment, and the opportunities and challenges of new technologies of communication.
