For Alex Russell France is not simply another European country - it is a different planet, where, although logic and commonsense exist, their rules are utterly different. This book is a compilation of (sometimes very) short stories linked by initial letters, based on the author's often bizarre experiences of trying to settle in central France with his partner Jane and their two oriental cats. Systematically he is wrong-footed by cultural, culinary and bureaucratic differences in the most commonplace of circumstances. At times he tries to turn the tables; very occasionally, he succeeds. Interspersed between the stories are snippets - sometimes whimsical, sometimes disturbing, but always unexpected. As in his previous book "iDream Ice-cream iScream," the reader is kept off-balance throughout.
Alex Russell is regarded as perhaps Australia's finest ever home-grown golf course architect. He served as the Australian partner of the famed Scottish architect Dr Alister MacKenzie in the design and construction of the West Course at Royal Melbourne Golf Club, and was solely responsible for the design of Yarra Yarra, Royal Melbourne's East Course, Lake Karrinyup in Perth and Paraparaumu Beach in New Zealand, all highly rated courses. However, he is important to the story of Australian golf for much more than just golf course design as he was a champion golfer, winning the 1924 Australian Open as an amateur, amongst numerous other national and state titles. Discovering Alex Russell: The Man...
Deadly accidents plague Swastica Mine at the tiny coal camp of Brilliant, New Mexico. But until young pit boss Manuel Torres decides to organize the men and fight for something better, no one has asked the obvious question: Why? Only after Manuel endures a grizzly escape from deep underground do the frightened miners agree to listen to him again. But even as he tries to build momentum for a union, Superintendent Alex Russell makes his final move to bury the secrets of Swastica Mine forever. Can Manuel stop him in time to rescue his town?
