Food, Feasting and Table Manners in the Late Middle Ages
This book offers a study of what and how people ate in the Iberian Peninsula between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. It has long been recognized that Mediterranean cultures attach great importance to communal meals and food cooked with great refinement. However, whilst medieval feasting in England, France and Italy has been thoroughly studied, Spain and Portugal have both been somewhat neglected in this area of study. This volume analyses how medieval men of the Iberian Peninsula questioned themselves about different aspects deemed important in social feasting. It investigates the acquisition of table manners and rhetorical skills, the interaction between medicine and eating, and the presence of food in literature and religion. The book also shows how this shared society and culture, as well as their attitude towards food, connected them to a Western European tradition. The book will appeal to scholars and students alike interested in food and feasting from the perspectives of literature, history, language, art, religion and medicine, and to those interested in a social, cultural and literary overview of life in the Iberian Peninsula during the late Middle Ages.

Ce livre propose des contributions qui examinent la notion de « genre bref » à la lumière de différents supports ou de différents canaux d’information (panneaux, inscriptions diverses, mais aussi affiches publicitaires, cinématographiques, slogans, recettes de cuisine, SMS). Il met en évidence les contraintes grammaticales, lexicales et énonciatives qui s’y manifestent et montre comment une dimension esthétique ou ludique peut s’inviter dans ce genre, favorisant ainsi un lien avec le destinataire, même si l’appareil énonciatif y est généralement fort réduit.

El exemplum histórico es una de las formas más difundidas del relato breve medieval. Acontecimientos, anécdotas, leyendas, crónicas han sido unas de las tantas fuentes que sirvieron para crear este especial tipo de narración. El presente estudio ofrece por primera vez un estudio global de esta forma narrativa que transitó toda la Edad Media y todos sus géneros. Cada capítulo va acompañado de Excursus que ofrecen estudios particulares sobre autores y relatos. El exemplum histórico no fue para el hombre medieval una forma entre otras de relatar acontecimientos: en sus manos se transformó en una manera más libre y personal de mirar la historia.

Contrary to common assumptions, medieval and early modern writers and poets often addressed the high value of freedom, whether we think of such fable authors as Marie de France or Ulrich Bonerius. Similarly, medieval history knows of numerous struggles by various peoples to maintain their own freedom or political independence.
