Die Idee zu diesem Handbuch entstand vor ein paar Jahren in einem Gespräch, das ich mit dem Cheflektor des Verlags Vieweg, Dipl.-Ing. Ewald Schmitt führte. Damals äußerte ich den Wunsch, ein Handbuch über Elektrische Maschinen und Antriebe schreiben zu wollen, das als komprimiertes Kompendium auch alle notwendigen Inhalte, wie z.B. spezielle Kapitel der Mathematik, Elektrotechnik, Werkstoffe, Meßtechnik, Leistungselektronik, Regelungstechnik u.a. beinhalten sollte. Während meiner beruflichen Laufbahn hatte ich ein solches Buch beim Studium oder bei Auseinandersetzungen mit Problemen der elektrischen Maschinen vermißt.
