Tone in Yongning Na
Yongning Na, also known as Mosuo, is a Sino-Tibetan language spoken in Southwest China. This book provides a description and analysis of its tone system, progressing from lexical tones towards morphotonology. Tonal changes permeate numerous aspects of the morphosyntax of Yongning Na; they are not the product of a small set of phonological rules, but of a host of rules that are restricted to specific morphosyntactic contexts. Rich morphotonological systems have been reported in this area of Sino-Tibetan, but book-length descriptions remain few. This study of an endangered language contributes to a better understanding of the diversity of prosodic systems in East Asia. The analysis is based on original fieldwork data (made available online), collected over the course of ten years, commencing in 2006.
A grammar of Japhug
Japhug is a vulnerable Gyalrongic language, which belongs to the Trans-Himalayan (Sino-Tibetan) family. It is spoken by several thousand speakers in Mbarkham county, Rngaba district, Sichuan province, China. This grammar is the result of nearly 20 years of fieldwork on one variety of Japhug, based on a corpus of narratives and conversations, a large part of which is available from the Pangloss Collection. It covers the whole grammar of the language, and the text examples provide a unique insight into Gyalrong culture. It was written with a general linguistics audience in mind, and should prove useful not only to specialists of Trans-Himalayan historical linguistics and typologists, but also to anthropologists doing research in Gyalrong areas. It is also hoped that some readers will use it to learn Japhug and pursue research on this fascinating language in the future.
The Dialect Laboratory
Much theorizing in language change research is made without taking into account dialect data. Yet, dialects seem to be superior data to build a theory of linguistic change on, since dialects are relatively free of standardization and therefore more tolerant of variant competition in grammar. In addition, as compared to most cross-linguistic and diachronic data, dialect data are unusually high in resolution. This book shows that the study of dialect variation has indeed the potential, perhaps even the duty, to play a central role in the process of finding answers to fundamental questions of theoretical historical linguistics. It includes contributions which relate a clearly formulated theoretical question of historical linguistic interest with a well-defined, solid empirical base. The volume discusses phenomena from different domains of grammar (phonology, morphology and syntax) and a wide variety of languages and language varieties in the light of several current theoretical frameworks.

A Corpus-Driven Approach to Language Contact

This book provides linguists with a clear, critical, and comprehensive overview of theoretical and experimental work on information structure. Leading researchers survey the main theories of information structure in syntax, phonology, and semantics as well as perspectives from psycholinguistics and other relevant fields. Following the editors' introduction the book is divided into four parts. The first, on theories of and theoretical perspectives on information structure, includes chapters on topic, prosody, and implicature. Part 2 covers a range of current issues in the field, including focus, quantification, and sign languages, while Part 3 is concerned with experimental approaches to information structure, including processes involved in its acquisition and comprehension. Constructions with Lexical Repetitions in East Slavic
Repetition is a well-studied phenomenon in morphology and lexicology but has received less attention on the syntactic level. The book sheds light on syntactic constructions with lexical repetition in East Slavic languages. Several contributions address syntactic constructions that have developed in form and meaning in accordance with general tendencies found in many languages, for example, English Boys will be boys. A Dongba pictographs dictionary with iconographic index plates
Stefano Zamblera, 2018: ""A Dongba Pictographs Dictionary with Iconographic Index Plates"" Dictionary of Dongba pictographs implemented in categories sorted by iconographic index plates of BASIC pictographs. Iconographic and graphic study of such corpus of glyphs evinced two distinguished sets of pictographs which could be named BASIC and COMPLEX. BASIC PICTOGRAPHS are those glyphs made by one and just one iconographic unit (signifier) that conveys its meaning through its pictorial resemblance to the physical object meant. BASIC PICTOGRAPHS are assembled together making COMPLEX PICTOGRAPHS, alias COMPLEX UNITS OF SIGNIFIERS. As any BASIC PICTOGRAPH consists in a signifier written by a minimal graphic unit, identification of BASIC PICTOGRAPHS categories to gather them coincides with the study and identification of a set of ICONOGRAPHIC PRIMES into Dongba pictographs corpus. ICONOGRAPHIC PRIME is then used in the making of iconographic index plates for BASIC PICTOGRAPHS.
