Angin topan disebut juga angin ribut atau pusaran angin. Dalam bahasa Inggris disebut Typhoon, Hurricane, atau Cyclone. Nama tersebut sebenarnya sama. Perbedaan nama terkait dengan daerah di mana angin itu terjadi. Di Karibia dan Pasifik dikenal dengan sebutan topan. Di teluk Benggala dan laut Arabia disebut Cyclone. Dikenal juga dengan siklon tropis untuk daerah Samudera Hindia dan barat daya Pasifik. Di tempat lain di dunia, Hurricane dikenal sebagai Bagyo di Filipina, Chubasco di Meksiko, dan Taino di Haiti.[]
