Modul ini disusun sebagai acuan dalam pembelajaran diklat keterampilan di PIP Semarang dan menyediakan pemahaman mendalam mengenai aspek-aspek kritis, prosedur-prosedur operasional, dan norma-norma keselamatan yang tak terpisahkan dari kehidupan di atas laut. Sesuai ketentuan STCW 1978 amandemen 1995 yang sudah diberlakukan secara internasional sejak 1 Februari 1997. Dengan adanya modul ini, maka akan membantu para peserta diklat lebih memahami pengetahuan lanjutan di bidang penyelamatan diri di laut, terutama pemahaman peluncuran dan pengoperasian sekoci penolong, sekoci penyelamat, rakit penolong dan prosedur perawatan mesin sekoci yang disesuaikan dengan sistem alat penolong yang tersedia di kapal. Pemahaman demikian merupakan hal pokok yang perlu dimiliki bagi setiap orang yang bertugas dalam melaksanakan peluncuran dan pengoperasian survival craft maupun petugas yang memberi komando pada saat akan meninggalkan kapal.
