Global citizenship education: preparing learners for the challenges of the 21st century
This report seeks to enhance understanding around Global Citizenship Education (GCE) and its implications for educational content, pedagogy and practice. It attempts to provide common perspectives and to clarify some of the contested aspects of GCE. The report features examples of good practices and existing approaches to GCE in different settings, while highlighting priority elements for the future agenda. The publication is the result of an extensive process of research, consultation, dialogue and information exchange with education experts, policy- makers, researchers, practitioners, representatives of youth, the civil society, media and other stakeholders from all over the world. It draws extensively on the foundational work of the two key UNESCO events: the Technical Consultation on Global Citizenship Education (Seoul, September 2013) and the first UNESCO Forum on Global Citizenship Education (Bangkok, December 2013).
Reclaimative Post-Conflict Justice
This book presents an important contribution to our understanding of post-conflict justice as an essential element of global ethics and justice through an exploration of the World Tribunal on Iraq (WTI). The 2003 War in Iraq provoked worldwide protests and unleashed debates on the war’s illegitimacy and illegality. In response, the WTI was organized by anti-war and peace activists, international law experts, and ordinary people who claimed global citizens’ rights to investigate and document the war responsibilities of official authorities, governments, and the United Nations, as well as their violation of global public will. Teaching Peace amidst Conflict and Postcolonialism
In a world where post-conflict and postcolonial countries struggle to heal from the past and meet new challenges, peace education is often neglected and instrumentalized for political agendas. Drawing on case studies from Afghanistan, Bolivia, Burundi, Colombia, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Sri Lanka, and Uruguay, this book shows that cultural and structural violence can, in turn, lead to direct violence. An effective program of peace education responds to these dynamics meeting our urgent problems and opening up new opportunities for peacebuilding. With this direction in mind, this book addresses the practices of peace education from around the world.
