Drug Resistance in Leishmania Parasites

Ancistrocladus Naphthylisoquinoline Alkaloids
This book describes a unique class of secondary metabolites, the mono- and dimeric-naphthylisoquinoline alkaloids. They exclusively occur in lianas of the palaeotropical Ancistrocladaceae and Dioncophyllaceae plant families. Their unprecedented structures include stereogenic centers and rotationally hindered, and therefore stereogenic, axes. Extended recent investigations on six Ancistrocladus species from Asia, as reported in this contribution, shed light on their fascinating phytochemical productivity, with over 100 intriguing natural products. This high chemodiversity arises from a similarly unique biosynthesis from acetate-malonate units, following a novel polyketidic pathway to plant-derived isoquinoline alkaloids. Some of the compounds show most promising anti-parasitic activities. Additionally, strategies for the regio- and stereoselective total synthesis of the alkaloids, including the directed construction of the chiral axis, are also presented.
Las TIC en el combate de las enfermedades desatendidas
Hay razones bien fundadas para ser optimistas en la investigación de las enfermedades desatendidas. En este libro, que recoge los resultados del trabajo de investigadores latinoamericanos, se confirman varios aspectos positivos. El primero es que en el campo de la investigación básica existe una notable atención a las enfermedades que azotan principalmente a la población más vulnerable del continente. El segundo, que las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC) apuntalan los desarrollos que habilitan los avances de las diversas investigaciones. Y el tercero, de gran relevancia, es que la ciencia que se produce en la región se traduce en resultados que están a la altura del estado del arte en este campo del conocimiento. Poner la información recogida en el presente estudio al acceso de quienes se ocupan de estos temas es el aporte de Fundación Telefónica para garantizar que ese optimismo se traduzca en beneficios sustentables, y nuestra forma de reiterar la confianza que tenemos en las bondades de la asociación entre las TIC y la ciencia básica.
