Economic Laws and Economic History
In this volume, Charles Kindleberger makes a powerful case against the idea that any one model could be used to unlock the basic secret of economic history. It is essentially an exercise in methodology, addressed to economists and economic historians alike. He argues that too many economists discover a relationship or a uniformity in economic behaviour, develop a model, and use it to explain more than it is capable of, including, on occasion, all economic behaviour. These lectures discuss four 'laws' in economics to show how uniformities can illuminate economic history in particular aspects. They illustrate the view that the economist or economic historian seeking to test analysis against historical data should have a variety of different models, and not just one. The implication is that however scientific and technical the tools, choosing them carefully to fit particular circumstances is itself an art.
Slavery Past, Present and Future
This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2016. Spanning swaths of time and space, slavery as a phenomenon has known intersections of class, gender, race, caste, etc. The historical experiences of slaves is more-or-less lacking in the pedagogic or intellectual knowledge, but its legacy in modern times is felt in the marginalisation, stigmatisation, remorse or shame of the slave descendants. Contrary to historical slavery, the presence of modern or twenty-first century slavery is variously mired in the complex and contested terrains of its definition. Today, the political and economic context of human conditions globally has muddled the understanding of servitude. Its resurgence in newer avatars, along with institutional or informal upholders challenges its abolition. Hearing the slave voices more than the hegemonic involvement of the abolitionists is required for its complete abolition. A unified public activism and awareness, as always will go a long way in ending it while upholding social justice.

The Gypsy Economist
This book offers the first intellectual biography of the Anglo Australian economist, Colin Clark. Despite taking the economics world by storm with a mercurial ability for statistical analysis, Clark’s work has been largely overlooked in the 30 years since his death. His career was punctuated by a number of firsts. He was the first economist to derive the concept of GNP, the first to broach development economics and to foresee the re-emergence of India and China within the global economy. In 1945, he predicted the rise and persistence of inflation when taxation levels exceeded 25 per cent of GNP. And he was also the first economist to debunk post-war predictions of mass hunger by arguing that rapid population growth engendered economic development. Clark wandered through the fields of applied economics in much the same way as he rambled through the English countryside and the Australian bush. His imaginative wanderings qualify him as the eminent gypsy economist for the 20th century.
