To make a friend is a joy. To make a friend in another country is a wonderment—a small miracle. Pardon My French follows the lives of an American couple who have embraced a daunting mission: Not to be spectators in France, but to be absorbed by France. Amidst the minefields of linguistic faux pas, the perplexities of French gestures, the exquisite and often exotic cuisine, and the splendor of Christmas on the Mediterranean—see what it is like for an occasionally gruff American to be adopted into a new family. Witness the hugging, the teasing, and the laughter that follows, when nothing on earth could be more perfect. Experience what it is like to fall in love with the French. Follow the ...

"Union and Democracy" by Allen Johnson is an important addition to American history literature. As a Harvard professor of American history, Johnson was an expert who was uniquely qualified to write on such a topic. Not only is his passion evident, but he knows how to write in a way to capture audiences, as that was the only way he would be able to maintain his students' attention, after all.

'The best memoir by a politician you will ever read' The Times School on the Kings Road, Chelsea in the Swinging 60s, the rock-and-roll years, the race riots; this boy has seen it all. Alan Johnson's childhood was not so much difficult as unusual - particularly for a man who was destined to become Home Secretary. Not in respect of the poverty, which was shared with many of those living in Britain's post-war slums, but in its transition from being part of a two-parent family to having a single mother and then to no parents at all... This is essentially the story of two incredible women: Alan's mother, Lily, who battled against poor health, poverty, domestic violence and loneliness to try to e...

Fun! a Boyhood

Fun! a Boyhood

I grew up in the '30s and '40s in an undeveloped suburb outside of Birmingham, Alabama. I was privileged to be born into a Coca-Cola family and had all the advantages, but my parents never coddled me and I was not over-protected. I was all boy--passionate about the woods, BB guns, firecrackers, bike riding and touch football, all of which played into the over-arching theme of my boyhood: having fun with my friends! I had a major talent for adventure and fun, and my parents gave me the freedom to develop this talent to the fullest. Fun! A Boyhood memorializes what was an extraordinarily joyful time in my life, along with some of the people and dogs who gave me so much love and friendship. Although this memoir is not great literature, I recommend it to anyone who wants to remember--or to younger people who want to know--whatit was like growing up in a simpler time. This is how it was...back then.

The Awakening

How do you find love where love does not exist? From out of a barefoot boyhood among endless rows of olive trees, and a forbidden passion for a courageous Moroccan beauty, to a horrific struggle against tyranny in the war-torn streets of 1936 Granada, comes a story where love cannot exist without mercy . . . mercy one carries for one’s whole life as a badge of honor . . . mercy and compassion passed down from generation to generation. Diego Garcia is now the gentle patriarch in a sun-scorched village perched among the rolling hills and olive groves of Andalusia, Spain. Diego survived the bloody Spanish Civil War only at great cost, and his enduring wish is that he could have saved others. ...
