Alliteration in Culture
Alliteration occurs in a wide variety of contexts in stress-initial languages, including Icelandic, Finnish and Mongolian. It can be found in English from Beowulf to The Sun . Nevertheless, alliteration remains an unexamined phenomenon. This pioneering volume takes alliteration as its central focus across a variety of languages and domains.
Alliteration, Again and Again
The genesis of the alliterations in this book was an email exchange in 2001 with a colleague in Albany, New York. In the emails, we traded alliterations back and forth, variously signing our emails Phrantic in Philadelphia, Accommodating in Albany, Perplexed in Philadelphia and finally, Alliterative in Albany. This email exchange was ultimately the inspiration for my first alliteration about the city of Albany. I then set myself the challenge of exploring the alliterative possibilities of each letter of the alphabet and this slim volume of alliterative verse, Alliteration, Again and Again, is the culmination of that endeavor. My earnest hope is that this work will not be dismissed as: Alliteration, an author affliction and awful addiction, avoiding any actual artistic achievement.!
Alliteration and Sound Change in Early English
This 2003 study uses evidence from early English verse to reconstruct the course of some central phonological changes in the history of the language. It builds on the premise that alliteration reflects faithfully the acoustic identity and similarity of stressed syllable onsets. Individual chapters cover the history of the velars, the structure and history of vowel-initial syllable onsets, the behaviour of onset clusters, and the chronology and motivation of cluster reduction (gn-, kn-, hr-, hl-, hn-, hw-, wr-, wl-). Examination of the patterns of group alliteration in Old and Middle English reveals a hierarchy of cluster-internal cohesiveness which leads to new conclusions regarding the causes for the special treatment of sp-, st-, sk- in alliteration. The analysis draws on phonetically based Optimality-Theoretic models. The book presents valuable information about the medieval poetic canon and elucidates the relationship between orality and literacy in the evolution of English verse.
Alliteration for Kids
My book teaches alliteration in an interactive and fun way. When young people learn to alliterate and practice it for fun or for a purpose, they learn to incorporate it into their writing. Alliteration is a common tool for journalists, authors, advertisers, and producers of movies. This book contains pictures and teasers so that young people can correlate it to the world around them. Since it is an instructional book, it does not have a story line; rather, the story line is every line itself! Additionally, after every alliterative verse, the reader has an opportunity to write his or her own alliterative verse with words or pictures. The Abc's of Alliteration Word Fun
The ABCs of Alliteration Word Fun is a multi-purpose book. This book was written for younger children and as a tool for olderchildren to help them learn more about the English language. Younger children can learn the letters in alphabetical order while learning their sounds. Older children could use the book to learn the skill of alphabetical order as well as appropriate word meanings. The skill of proper sentence structure and word use is also introduced in the book. The alliterations at the end of the book were provided as a challenge for older students/children to entice them to write their own alliterations. With the many language skill possibilities presented in this book I think it can be seen as a multi-purpose learning tool.
