This is a collection of eight ghost stories, written by the remarkably prolific husband and wife team of Claude and Alice Askew, centering on Aylmer Vance, an investigator of the supernatural. Dexter, the narrator, meets Vance during a fishing holiday and Vance tells him three ghost stories on successive nights, each story involving Vance more closely in the action. The fourth story brings Dexter himself into the action, and reveals him to have unsuspected clairvoyant powers. The remaining stories feature Vance and Dexter as a sort of Holmes-and-Watson team investigating incidents not all of which prove to have supernatural causes. The final story, "The Fear" is very effective, describing a house in which a general feeling of extreme fear grips the inhabitants at various times and locations; the emotion of fear is effectively evoked and an interesting tale is constructed as Vance and Dexter work to assign the fear "a local habitation and a name".
The devil whispered in our ears. We listened. We obeyed. We sinned. Shall we repent? Or shall we take you down with us? Thou shall not have any other gods before me. Thou shall not make yourself a carved image. Thou shall not take the Lord's name in vain. Thou shall remember the Sabbath Day and keep it holy. Thou shall honor your mother and father.Thou shall not murder. Thou shall not commit adultery. Thou shall not steal. Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Thou shall not covet your neighbor's house. *This is NOT a religious book. This is dark, depraved, and delicious and is intended for a mature audience 18+. I deal in beautiful things. I'm paid to create unique masterpieces and I enjoy my work. I'm the best there is because I'm patient, kind, and quick. I wear the mask of humanity when I need to, and I play the part of just another stranger walking past you on the street, but there's something I want that I can't quite seem to get my hands on. For all of the blood I shed-for all of the flesh I've stripped, there's only one touch that I long to feel. I may be a master of manipulation, yet when it comes to the hope of something that's just mine-something unexplainable toward another living creature that I long so desperately for, I'm a coward. But there's only so many times I'll be willing to stand by and watch what I want walk away from me before I acquire it. I've had enough patience and I've scolded myself more than once over this and I refuse to wait any longer. We belong together.
A family's love can be everything ...From the Wreckage of Illicit affairs and the Lies that Bind us close together, how can it be wrong when it seems so right?Even Against the Spread of an Indecent Craving, there is a hope that can't be broken between the blood that runs through our veins. And if you look closely enough in the South of Nowhere, you'll find that even the most Intimate Relations end in ways that satisfy the curious mind that follows their heart.
Things are different when you're a burden.I was dumped at Carroll's Home for Troubled Youth by parents I can't quite remember-or maybe I came here on my own. No ... I was found guilty of a crime and that's why I'm here. It all depends on who you ask or choose to believe, I guess.I spend my days with my best friend who's done way more heinous things than I have.He wants me to remember-to tell him stories about being a stranger in a strange land, but I don't want to talk about it because when you talk about things, that's how they become real again. Because it was real, no matter what Dr. Carpenter or any of the orderlies say, and Ever is the only one that believes me. He wants me to go back, but I can't. There's a bounty on my head.I stole something from the Queen and she'll stop at nothing to get it back.Nothing.
The widely acclaimed illustration of a contrast of cultures in which young European air crash survivors inadvertently 'murder' their Aboriginal saviour.
For ten long years, I stayed away to protect her.I thought I'd successfully subverted my wolf's instincts where Bethany was concerned. But when I saw her on that dance floor, my inner beast took over. I told myself it would be just one dance. One dance and I'd let her go. I didn't mean to bite her. Or f*ck her in the middle of a crowded dance club.Or kidnap her¿ again.
I always wanted to find a place where I belonged.A place where I wasn't looked at differently for being one in a million.I left home when I was seventeen looking for this nirvana on Earth that I knew had to exist somewhere, and I finally found it in a small revival of traveling performers. No one here looks at me any differently because of my illness. See, even though I look like the perfect picture of health, that couldn't be further from the truth.I don't believe that my anomalies make me any less of a person than someone who has the ability to feel certain things. My new family has welcomed me with open arms, and even made me a top billing because of what I can withstand-which to say is a lot.Until him.I never knew that I didn't care to feel anything until he joined us.I want to feel him.I need to feel him.I've finally found the one thing I'm unable to withstand, and when I feel his eyes on me, I know that things will be alright eventually. He wants to help me-I can see it in the way he looks at me. Whether he admits it or not, I know that he's come here for me.
