This book provides a uniquely positioned contribution to the current debates on the integration of immigrants in Europe. Twelve social anthropologists—“strangers by vocation”—reflect upon how they were taken in by those they studied over the course of their long-term fieldwork. The societies concerned are Sinti (northern Italy), Inuit (Canadian Arctic), Kanak (New Caledonia), Māori (New Zealand), Lanten (Laos), Tobelo and Tanebar-Evav (Indonesia), Banyoro (Uganda), Gawigl and Siassi (Papua New Guinea) and a township in Odisha (India). A comparative analysis of these reflexive, ethnographic accounts reveals as yet underrepresented, non-European perspectives on the issue of integrating strangers, enabling the reader to identify and reflect upon the uniquely Western ideals and values that currently dominate such discourse.
Medical research has been central to biomedicine in Africa for over a century, and Africa, along with other tropical areas, has been crucial to the development of medical science. At present, study populations in Africa participate in an increasing number of medical research projects and clinical trials, run by both public institutions and private companies. Global debates about the politics and ethics of this research are growing and local concerns are prompting calls for social studies of the “trial communities” produced by this scientific work. Drawing on rich, ethnographic and historiographic material, this volume represents the emergent field of anthropological inquiry that links Africanist ethnography to recent concerns with science, the state, and the culture of late capitalism in Africa.

Der Klang des Mittelalters scheint leicht zu imaginieren, denkt man etwa an die Schlachtenrufe mittelalterlicher Helden, an den liturgischen Gesang gregorianischer Choräle, den feierlichen Klang des Kirchengeläuts oder aber an die feinen Töne der Minnesänger. Obwohl sich die Sound Studies in den vergangenen Jahren weitestgehend etabliert haben und mithin verstärkt nach Rolle und Funktion auditiver Wahrnehmung gefragt wird, ist die historische Dimension vormoderner Akustik bislang nur vereinzelt in den Blick genommen worden. Der Sammelband vereint Beiträge, in denen aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive nach der Bedeutung von Lautsphären, der spezifischen Semantisierung und der Funktion von Klangkulissen in der Vormoderne gefragt wird. Dabei spielt das Verhältnis von Text und Klang, Raum und Klang, Architektur und Akustik ebenso eine Rolle wie die symbolische Bedeutung und die Spezifik sinnlicher Wahrnehmung von Lautsphären.
