Based on an analysis of the diplomatic practice of States, and decisions by national and international courts, this book explores the two central questions of the recognition of governments. These are namely: what are the meanings of the term 'recognition' and its variants in international law; and what is the effect of recognition on the legal status of foreign authorities, and in particular of authorities in exile recognized as governments. The book is comprehensive in its analysis of the issues, and covers material which is of significant historical interest, as well as highly topical material such as recent developments in Angola, Kuwait and Haiti. Thus Talmon's book will hold great appeal for international law scholars and practitioners alike. It may also be of interest to diplomats and civil servants working in organizations such as the United Nations.

More than 500 illustrations complement the text. An appendix section includes protocols and outcome statistics from over 50 leading epilepsy surgery centers.
This book reflects debates and results which have developed since the introduction of an international system of classifications in epileptology. The creation of such a system was initiated, in the sixties, mainly for practical reasons: growing international exchange had revealed that divergence of terminology in epilepsy had become important enough to prove a serious obstacle to sensible discussions. The Bethel-Cleveland symposia, which was at the origin of this book, aim to bring the excellence of advanced inter-disciplinary and controversial workshops to a larger public. The book concentrates on a selection of topics where progress has been made, where controversies are open or where discussion needs to be stimulated.
Reinmar der Alte, the twelfth-century poet also known as Reinmar von Hagenau, wrote a considerable number of 'Frauenlieder' and 'Frauenstrophen', i.e. poems and stanzas in which the speaker is a woman. However, there has never been a satisfactory scholarly treatment of these poems. Throughout the history of scholarship dealing with his works, the evaluation has been based mainly on a characterization of his personality. This volume tries to fill this gap by presenting and analysing the Woman's Song of Reinmar.
