Life Histories of Women Panchayat Sarpanches from Haryana, India
This volume represents a collection of life histories of women who live in rural Haryana. It looks at the impact of the 73rd Amendment to India’s constitution, which introduced reservations in the political arena for women. The Panchayati Raj Act of 1992 reserved one third of all Sarpanch positions for women, and granted constitutional status to the Panchayat system, outlining its specific functions and jurisdiction. This book enhances existing scholarship on the impact of these changes in that it provides the opportunity for women Sarpanches from Haryana to speak for themselves and reflect upon their journey. Ten elected women Sarpanches share their stories about their lives, from childhood to adolescence to adulthood. Their life histories address the following questions: Who are these women who agreed to run for a reserved seat in the elections? What motivated them? Why were they asked to run? What barriers do they face? Do they feel they are making a difference? Indeed, these stories reflect the lived realities of the women impacted by the changes in legislation.

As a contribution to the anthropology of democracy, this book examines a local governance reform in India - focusing particularly on the 33% women's quota entailed. It highlights the interrelatedness of "doing gender" and "doing politics" and delineates the transformations of gendered political spaces and the shifting boundaries within which women of various castes and classes negotiate the meanings of politics. The book investigates the vernacularization of democracy and analyzes local politics as socially embedded - a framework that allows the frictions and contradictions of local politics to be explained without having to take recourse to dichotomies of "traditional vs. modern" or "formal vs. informal" politics. Developmental Local Governance
The primary purpose of this edited collection is to evaluate critically the relationship between local government and national economic development. It focuses on how the relationship between local government and development is structured, and the specific institutional arrangements at national and subnational levels that might facilitate local government's assumption of the role of development agent. In light of the contradictory outcomes of development and implied experimentation with new modalities, post-development discourse provides a useful explanatory framework for the book. Schoburgh, Martin and Gatchair's central argument is that the pursuit of national developmental goals is given a sustainable foundation when development planning and strategies take into account elements that have the potential to determine the rate of social transformation. Their emphasis on localism establishes a clear link between local government and local economic development in the context of developing countries.
