Islamic Science

Science was conceived as something absolute by the Positivists; they thus failed to see that it is basically a human activity and that no human phenomenon can be absolute. The discussion in this monograph takes its departure from this point and investigates the epistemological foundations of science. It argues that one such foundation is the worldview of the scientist which reflects his physical-social environment. If this is the case, then it becomes clear why there can be a certain scientific activity that can be identified as Islamic. This is the fundamental theoretical ground upon which Islamic Science: Towards a Definition is based. In order to demonstrate this point, the author attempts to present a historical illustration of how scientific activities gradually emerged in Islam within the first three centuries, i.e. 610-900 AD. The argument developed follows three frameworks that are said to be the foundation of these activities: 1) the Islamic worldview; 2) the Islamic scientific conceptual scheme; and 3) specific terminology of each science. These points are all defined and clarified from an epistemological standpoint.

The Companion to Said Nursi Studies

Contemporary Islamic theology remains a neglected area in studies on Islam. This work is dedicated to the thought and ideas of Said Nursi (1876–1960), one of the most prominent Muslim theologians of the twentieth century. Nursi inspired a faith movement—the Nur community—that originated in Turkey. It continues to play a key role in the revival of Islam and now numbers several millions of followers worldwide. His legacy and impact deserve therefore to be examined more closely. This volume is the most substantial overview in English of the inspiration of Said Nursi and his masterpiece the Risale-i Nur. In the beginning, the essays provide the reader with Nursi’s historical context and biography. Then Nursi’s theological views, his understanding of society, and ideas on politics are placed under the spotlight. Over the last twenty years, more and more comparative religion specialists in the West have become acquainted with Said Nursi. Nursi studies is now an established discipline, and this volume is a celebration of that reality. As it reveals, Muslims and Christians are grappling with the wisdom of this remarkable, rich thinker.

Ghazālī’s Epistemology

Focusing on Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī (d. 1111) – one of the foremost scholars and authorities in the Muslim world who is central to the Islamic intellectual tradition – this book embarks on a study of doubt (shakk) and certainty (yaqīn) in his epistemology. The book looks at Ghazālī’s attitude to philosophical demonstration and Sufism as a means to certainty. In early scholarship surrounding Ghazālī, he has often been blamed as the one who single-handedly offered the death-blow to philosophy in the Muslim world. In much of contemporary scholarship, Ghazālī is understood to prefer philosophy as the ultimate means to certainty, granting Sufism a secondary status. Hence, much of ...
