For more than a century, a Gilded Age mansion on the south side of New York City's Gramercy Park has been home to the National Arts Club (NAC), its magnificent interior a refuge from hectic city life. In this special catalog, Lowrey, curator of the club's permanent collection, documents selected works by Artist Life Members, artists who were given lifetime memberships in the club in exchange for one of their works (the program ended in 1950 with the advent of the abstract expressionists). The father of well-known American sculptor Alexander Calder, Alexander Stirling Calder, was an Artist Life Member, and his sculpture of the painter George Bellows is among the many artworks included here. "Built to Last: 100+ Year-Old Hotels East of the Mississippi" is a sequel to my 2011 book, "Built To Last: 100+ Year-Old Hotels in New York." It has 86 chapters, one for each century-old hotel (of 50 rooms or more) east of the Mississippi River and each is illustrated by an antique postcard. The Foreword was written by Joseph McInerney, CHA, President of the American Hotel & Lodging Association. The book has been accepted for promotion, distribution and sale by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute. My research into the histories of these hotels turned up fascinating stories about single-minded developers, brilliant and accidental architects, dedicated owners, famous and infamous guests and even the story of an underground bunker-shelter the size of two football fields built under a hotel to house the U.S. Government in the event of a nuclear war.

Founded as part of the Jersey City Public Library in 1901, the Jersey City Museum is the only cultural institution of its kind in the state. The museum's permanent collection features American art and material culture from the region dating from the colonial period through the present. This is the first collections catalog that the Museum has published and will introduce readers to its eclectic holdings. The selection of 150 objects, presented chronologically, represents highlights from each of the genres, including painting, sculpture, decorative arts, photography, works on paper, furniture, metals, and ephemera. The museum's own lengthy and varied history helped to form its collections. An...
